Are you going into System Preferences>Print & Scan and then clicking on the "+" symbol to add the printer? I just went through this yesterday with my new HP printer and there isn't an install disc yet so you have to do a little digging to get the Mac to "find" the printer. After you click the "+" symbol and select the printer there will be another little window or box (whatever you want to call it) that opens and at the bottom is a drop down list. Click on that and select "Air Print" and then tell it ok. The Mac will find it that way and then install the necessary drivers. If you set the printer up wirelessly, you don't technically need a wireless router just to print. You will need a wireless router to use any of the other features on the printer such as the many apps available via its touch screen.
