Note: I changed the title to something more descriptive.

Can you provide more details please? What version of Safari? What version of OS X? What do you mean by "preferences passwords"?

6.1.6 (7537.78.2), Mac 10.7.5. in Safari under preference there is a passwords menu. it stores usernames and passwords automatically, if you have selected the options. it is really a password manager. somehow i just wiped mine clean ! i have Time Machine and read that Safari stores this in a plist file, so am now looking for the plist file. If anyone has a better idea, would be appreciated..thanks
