I was wondering 2 things about it, because a friend of mine is interested in purchasing one.

1 - Is it possible to install a second drive to the Imac? She has an IDE drive.

2 - It memory is an integrated graphics that shares 64MB with the main memory. Can that be increased? If not, will 64MB limit her from watching movies, online videos or work on photoshop, illustrator??

Let me know, thanks.

1. No, buy you could get an external firewire or USB enclosure for the drive and use it that way.

2. Yes, it is shared. The Intel GMA950 allows for using up to 224mb for video, but I am pretty sure Apple has it fixed to 64mb. It should be easily enough for movies and online videos, it will also be good enough for Photoshop/Illustrator.

2. I think that 64mb is not enought for Photoshop/ Illustrator. If I were her, i would go with the Non Educational iMac 17" with 2GB Ram

Photoshop uses alot of ram and will render/load/work faster. I think it is a great upgrade.

Just to clarify, he was referring to VRAM, not system RAM. :black:
And yes, 64 MB of VRAM is plenty for Photoshop and Illustrator.

Okay, I know RAM is an easy upgrade and cheaper than what Apple will it to you for.

So let me get this straight, its shared RAM but Apple has it fixed or defaulted to 64MB???

Can it be changed somehow?

I think my old windows machine allowed me to adjust the amount of RAM allocated to video.

Thanx for all the feedback!

sweet, I think she's going to go for it. Her PC is giving her the Blue Screen of death! Another converted to Apple!

..........now I need to convert!! I'm waiting for "Mac Pro's" specs, then I'll decide.

The "education" iMac should be good enough for basic stuff at college:

surfing the net
e-mail
playing songs & videos

I'm wonderin if an "education" iMac will be available with a DVD burner?

ps: RAM can be upgraded later to 2gigs max...at 515, it will be enough for basic stuff

Is there a way you can buy it? I thought it was available for education only.

You can buy it if you meet the criteria for the Student/Teacher Discount.
