I've just upgraded to iPadOS 18 because of a security scare. But all the icons have changed to have black backgrounds, which I hate as they're not nearly so recognisable. Am I stuck with them or is there an app that will change them back?.

Can you post a screen grab? I think they are just being updated/downloaded from iCloud.

Although customisation of app appearance is an option in iPadOS I dont think just upgrading would change anything from the previous setup, you have to make it so.

True, Rod, but we need to see if the customization in face fixes it for MacBiter. I have my icons dark, and I like the look. I don't use the dark desktop, just the icons themselves.

And depending on how long it's been since the upgrade it could also be what Bob suggested, as the upgrade/migration is actually a new install of the apps themselves, and the icons are darkened until the download/install is complete.

Hard to tell until the OP comes back.

Not so. I've always had dark appearance (e.g. in Settings, iCloud Drive, and everywhere else Apple), but my home screen icons have always been light which I assumed was the default. But after upgrading to iPadOS 18, my home screen suddenly, for the first time ever, looked like this:

...which you may well agree, is pretty horrible! But thanks to MacInWin's help, all is back to normal again.

Same for me, at least on my iPhone and they didn't change when I upgraded to iOS 18 although the option to do so became available but there you are. Jake was right, i'm glad that fixed it.

I've now discovered the reason: iPadOS 18 has introduced an extra setting "Dark mode until sunrise [or sunset]". I now find that though my home screen icons are back to permanent lightness, my Dark mode choice in Appearance doesn't stick, and each morning I'm back to Light mode. It's not exactly difficult to switch back again, but it's a hassle. Is there a way I can have Dark mode permanent like before, like my home screen icons are back to permanent lightness?

By the way, upgrading my iPhone didn't have these problems - iOS 18 has kept what I had before!.

Settings>Display&Brightness> click on your desired display, Light or Dark, then turn off Automatic, directly beneath that.
