While we were living in Tallahassee, Florida I commuted to the govt compound I worked at in Thomasville, Georgia. Lots of Civil War historical sites nearby including a Confederate POW camp where Union soldiers were interned at.

I've also visited Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Interesting to note that both battles were won on the 4th of July, 1863.

Hi Charlie - looking at the map below, assume the POW camp was not the famous Andersonville - never been there myself. Son & I did a Mississippi blues trip when he was a teenager - stayed in Vicksburg one night and visited the battlefield and took a boat ride on the river - made my second trip to Gettysburg a few years ago; the ugly tower was down and a new visitor's center opened w/ a great restoration of the diorama painting - we took a battle field tour w/ a wonderful guide who was like an actor! July 4th of 1863 was quite a gift to Abe Lincoln w/ the surrender of Vicksburg (the town did not celebrate the holiday until 1945!) and with Bobby Lee heading back to Virginia. Dave :)

Sounds like a couple of great trips Dave. I too was wondering if perhaps Charlie had visited Andersonville. It's not the only camp that had a horrible but it may be the only one most people know anything at all about.

Never been to Andersonville. Apparently, the Confederacy had a number of POW camps throughout Georgia. The town of Thomasville, Georgia where I was working at the time held one of those smaller POW camps. I used to make the 64 mile round trip from our home in Tallahassee, Florida to Thomasville on a daily basis.
