If your just surfing the web, doing email, and general word processing then yes 512 will do the job. It is when you get into graphics and movies and other hungry programs that you need more. If you only run one or two things at the same time you probably won't notice any difference.

yeah cause im getting a Ibook G4 12 inch but all im using it for is word documents, Music and surfing the net and AIM.

Someone tell me though, why not spend $200 more and get a Dell Inspiron with windows XP and a high end graphics card and 1 gig of ram etc?

What makes the mac better?

If you aren't gaming a high end graphics card isn't going to help you much. I am actually disappointed in Dell's more recent laptop offerings since they are more commonly offered with an intergrated graphics solution.

If you don't value OS X at all then you might want to consider a Windows system.

No, actually the Dell has a Extremly good graphics card high end. (6800 256MB)

I'm just saying, whats so great about mac? I never owned one and I've heard so much about it ( positive) so what maeks it better then windows?

IF I got the Mac, I would give up gaming on the go and only game at home when I'm home. If I got the dell, I would game at both places. If I get the mac I'm giving up Gaming, which doesnt bother me that much since I have a Rig with a x850XT PE At home, I"m just asking, what makes mac so good?

On the high end laptops like the XPS m170 and 9300 they have some good graphics options, but those are things are massive. My 2+ year old Dell 600m has a Radeon 9000 which is better than the GMA900 they are putting in the new Dell 630m.

Apple hardware isn't all that great for the money compared with its PC counterparts. You really have to enjoy and appreciate the benefits of OS X to make it worth it.

OSX is very user friendly. I wouldn't say I really switched as I have used them my whole life pretty much but when I got my iBook after a few weeks I was really comfortable with the features of the OS. I can't really pinpoint what is 'better' though I just feel more comfortable using OSX over Windows. It is the most stable OS I have used and the security is just so much better. There is just too much to really talk about though. I am actually showing someone how to use Tiger on friday for a friend of my boss.

It is basically less headache in my opinion. I am not going to knock windows but since I am not forced to use it I can honestly say I would choose OSX over windows just because it fits right into my lifestyle.

If you still have a desktop PC for gaming, having an Apple laptop would complement it well.

If you take care of it, it should last you AT LEAST 3 years.

That all depends on what you are doing. Certain tasks are going to be more intensive on computer parts (thus reducing their life) than others.
