-reference, i have:
+Model Name: MacBook Pro
+Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
+Processor Name: intel Core 2 Duo
+Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
+Memory: 4 GB
+Bus Speed: 800 MHz
+running osx 10.3.5

+using the spdif optical out, optical cable to a creative audio decoder ddts-100 and creative giga speakers.

?? i see an option to enable the optical output and it sounds ok but do not see any surround sound controls in the mac osx.
question:
+does anyone have input what apple was thinking here?
+is this a functional format for a 5.1 decoder?
+is there an airport box that can link my mbpro to a decoder as 5.1 sound

thanks!
4me the audio and sound is sooo important on any computer.

ya

in apple->systempreferences->sound->output->chose sound output
"digital out ~ built-in-Output" shows up but also
"the selected device has no output controls"

-most stuff that has a optical out also has some adjustments
-is there an airport option to do this w/o the cable-
