Just wondering if it was that the sticks were not avaible at the time apple wrote its specs. Like on the orginal 17 inch PB that can now go upto 2GB with 1GB memory modules.
the new powerbooks are built to support 1gb models the older ones do not support them. G4's can not support more then 2gb of ram and with 4 slots only support up to 512each
You can use the 1GB modules in the original 12 and 17. (Without official apple support.)

8/29/03 -- Trans International now has 1GB memory modules for the 12" PowerBook ($499) as well as the 17"PowerBook (xxx). That takes care of my main " missing piece " in the PowerBook design: limited memory expansion. http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=942&RequestTimeOut=500
