3rd gen what gen, click wheel?

Anyone care to direct me to a comprehensive explanation as to what the difference between the gens are etc? I've been researching ipods and find constant references to these terms. I've been shopping online and they are just listed by size, though some say click wheel and some do not.

Most everything you'll find online is the 4th generation iPod.. the latest.. the 3rd gen has buttons above the scroll wheel, while the 4th they are built into the scroll wheel. 1st and 2nd.. I don't remember what they were like

This is a great little application you've found here...however it is missing one thing. the 15 gig ipod. Eh, I guess the 3rd gen 20 is close enough.
