I did a search on here, but I couldn't find my question. That could be due to my crap search skills, or something else, but I have an early 2009 24" iMac and am looking to replace the screen since my current one has some images slightly burned into it and will only worsen. Of course I can simply buy a replacement on ebay or something similar, however a person has advertised a 24" Apple display (not computer) for sale that I will buy if it is compatible. So, my questions is...

Is a 24" display screen interchangeable with a 24" iMac screen?

I have been using my iMac for a while, and about 2 months ago I switched out the 1 TB HD for a 256GB SSD, so doing the screen change should be easier if it is just a simple swap.

TIA

You can't use just any 24" display screen. Obtain the part number of your screen and then do some shopping on eBay or Craig's list for an exact replacement. The 24" screens that Apple used in some iMac models were troublesome. I remember seeing a rash of complaints about them here in our forums. Discoloring, image burn, and just plain poor quality were the main complaints. Apple did eventually replace all those free of charge.

Yea sorry to say you want to replace it with another screen from the same machine and honestly it shouldn't have burned in if you leave the energy saver options alone

Chscag, thanks for your reply. I hadn't heard about the display problems until now, but I think my problem is more of an issue of the tool bar being in the same place most of the time as opposed to a bad screen.

Johnodd4, actually, my iMac was a refurb, with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB.
The burn marks are barely noticeable. I have been using the energy saver and screen saver for about the past 3 years, but I do use my iMac quite a bit so it has done me pretty well for over 5 years. Replacing the screen for $150 will give me at least another 2-3 years with it instead of plonking down $2K for a new 27" which is quite steep for my purposes and won't really benefit me work-wise other than the "WOW" factor.
So, I am just considering jumping on a great local Craigslist deal for a 24" Apple display if the screen from the 24" Apple display can be pulled and installed on the iMac easily.

I have seen 24" iMac replacement screens on Ebay and other sites for about $200 with shipping, but I can essentially walk to the location of the 24" Apple Display in 10 minutes and save $50 if it is simply a plug and play swap.

iMac: Built-in Display: 24.0" Widescreen Native Resolution: 1920x1200
Details: This model has a 24.0" "glossy" TFT widescreen active matrix display with a native resolution of 1920x1200. Apple also reports a "typical" brightness of 385 cd/m2, contrast ratio of 750:1, and viewing angle of 178 degrees horizontal and 178 degrees vertical.

Apple Display: Brightness: 330 cd/m2 Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
Details: Brightness and contrast ratio are "typical" for this display.

It doesn't look like the same display to me, so it looks like I might be out of luck because it will likely have some issues beyond my capabilities
