2021 MBP 16-inch Crashes While Asleep w/USB Charging

My new 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro CPU crashes almost every night while sleeping. I think I've finally figured it out and would appreciate if anyone else is having the same problem. If I close the lid during the day, it works fine but at night I will close the lid and plug in the USB-C charger on a timer typically set for 15minutes to 1 hour as the machine is so efficient. in the morning I will open the lid to a crash report. Usually, if I don't put it on to charge, it doesn't crash while sleeping. My guess is that if the lid is closed and the MBP put on charge (USB-C?) it crashes. A typical crash report is attached. If this is happening to anyone else, I'd like some input?

Welcome to the forum.

I won't open attached text files (don't take that personally, I just don't open things I don't know about) but if you post the contents of the crash report you may get more help. I have the same machine, but I just leave it plugged in overnight. The charging circuits will "learn" your pattern of use and charge up the machine to a certain point and stop, then a bit before your "normal" time to wake it up will push the charge to full. So, no need for a timer, just let the MBP do what it does.

Have you ever just plugged it directly in to the wall outlet overnight?

Thanks for your suggestions. The attached text file is the crash report and with the file extension.txt, it cannot do anything except display text. But how I charge it shouldn't have any effect on why it crashes?

I'm confused about your response. I'm on my 3rd Mac and this is the first one that crashes when asleep. While leaving it plugged in might hide the problem, it is not fixing it.

I don't believe in leaving a laptop plugged in all the time as keeping the battery at 100% is hard on Lithium-ion batteries, at least that's my experience.

It's known as diagnosing the issue. Try it or not, that's your decision. If you're not going to try everything, you'll never find the fix.

Apple has made the charging circuitry "smart" so that it is not hard on the battery to keep it charged, as I described in post #2. So leave it plugged in overnight.

You say that, but I don't open items from people I don't personally know unless I ordered or expected it. Sorry, but that's called "safe" computing. If you want us to see the crash report, copy and paste the entire thing into a post.

If you can't or won't work with us, there is little we can do to help you. Remember, we are NOT there with you, so we are dependent on you to work with us to find out what is going on. What we are suggesting are the things we would do if we were in the room with your machine.

As the Mac is new I would talk to Apple Support or take it to an Apple store if convenient. They can talk you through some diagnostic tests. You could also try some third party diagnostic tool such as Etrecheck. If the Mac is faulty you should be able to get it replaced for free surely.

I'll post the crash report after this brief message. A lot of forums don't allow a large post and so you have to attach it. For two nights now I've charged my MBP before putting it to sleep for the night and it didn't crash. It's starting to see that charging while asleep is the culprit. I don't know if USB charging is any different than MagSafe charging but I normally use USB charging as MagSafe charges so fast it's hard to stop it at about 80% charge. For those who've asked, I've talked with Apple support several times with no help beyond erase the hard disk, reinstall the OS, and reinstall my programs, which I don't want to do unless it's absolutely necessary.

I tried to post the crash report but the forum doesn't allow posting of a long document as I suspected?

MBP 16" 2023 (M3 Pro), iPhone 15 Pro, plus ATVs, AWatch, MacMinis (multiple)
I did a quick Internet search and found one other report, from Germany, of that problem: MacBook Pro 16" (M1Pro) crashed beim aufw… - Apple Community

Again, as I said, if you use the MagSafe (or the USBc) charging, the circuitry in the charging section of the MBP will manage the battery for you. No need to worry about stopping at 80%. So, in a sense, you are creating the problem needlessly. However, that doesn't mean you don't have a problem, or that it is acceptable. Given the sparseness of the issue, I recommend you contact Apple through their website and the Support section there to see if your Mac needs replacing.

As the Mac is new I would talk to Apple Support or take it to an Apple store if convenient. They can talk you through some diagnostic tests. You could also try some third party diagnostic tool such as Etrecheck. If the Mac is faulty you should be able to get it replaced for free surely.
Thanks for the response. I really don't think my MPB has faulty hardware as it runs perfectly except when sleeping and being charged at the same time. I've heard back from others who are seeing the same problem, so for now I'm assuming it is a Monterey issue and will hope for a cure. Every time it crashes I send the log report to Apple and assume they are reviewing it. The interesting thing is that the crash reports don't end up being stored in the crash reports section of Console. I've found that I can copy the report then allow the machine to boot and copy to Notes so I have a copy.

I'm sorry so you are saying that since I don't fully charge my MBP this is the problem? I'm not trying to get into a war with words with you and appreciate your comments but if not fully charging a Mac will cause it to crash would be a serious issue in my mind.

I'm an electrical engineer and use battery-powered devices all the time. While I don't have multiple MBP's to test, I see that holding the charge to 80% on a Lithium-ion battery will typically double the life of the battery. There are numerous articles on this subject. I also agree that Apple states the laptop learns how to charge itself but I don't see any harm in holding the max charge to 80%. My new MBP is so battery efficient that I can use it all day and then only charge it for 1/2-hour or so to bring it back to 80%.

I charged my MBP for 2 nights before putting it to sleep and it didn't crash, so I'm becoming more confident that it is charging while asleep that is causing the problem. In every case the main error message in the crash report is "Failed to resume ACIOPHY from S2R: 0xe00002d6" and I can find no links to ACIOPHY on the Internet plus I've asked Apple support and they didn't have a clue.

I'm sorry so you are saying that since I don't fully charge my MBP this is the problem? I'm not trying to get into a war with words with you and appreciate your comments but if not fully charging a Mac will cause it to crash would be a serious issue in my mind.
Sorry you took it that way. I did not intend to imply the problem was generated by you. All I meant to say was that by doing what you are doing the problem is manifesting. If you were to leave it on mains, not on a timer, it might not crash.

There is an issue with some of the new M1 Macs that if you plug it into mains when the machine is not booted it will cycle the power on and off, over and over, but never actually charge the battery. The workaround to that is to boot the machine, then connect power, then you can shut it down again and the cycling doesn't start. That bug may be a part of your problem, but it doesn't generate a crash report because it's not crashing, just not connecting to mains. I don't know what Apple plans to do about it, if anything. I'm traveling, but plan to contact Apple when I get home next week to see what they have to say. The issue has been reported in several sites, but none mention crashes, and my Mac doesn't crash at all, so the two items may or may not be related.

One final thought.

You have now disclosed three items that you didn't mention before:

1. You are an electrical engineer.
2. You have searched the Internet for the failure message in the crash report.
3. You have contacted Apple.

Those three items make a HUGE difference in how I would have approached this issue from the beginning. I took the time to talk about the smart battery management because I thought from your posts you were unaware of the advancement in battery management from Apple. I would not have done that if you had mentioned those three things.

It's interesting in that if you look at System Preferences/Battery and Usage History, you can watch the smart technology holding the battery below 100% (after it learns your routine) and then suddenly pushing the battery to top off just before it "expects" you to start using it. You can turn that function off, if you prefer to self manage, in System Preferences/Battery/Battery by checking/de-checking the "Optimize battery charging" option. In fact, if you want to continue to self-manage that manually, I would recommend turning it off so that you aren't "competing" for battery management.

My next recommendation was going to be to call Apple, but you say you've done that, so I'll drop out of this thread. Best of luck with the problem.
