When I bought my new Mini, the guy at Apple said that the only DVD drive that will work with it (because of the Mini firmware) is the (overpriced) SuperDrive. Ideally, I'd like to buy an external Blu-Ray burner/player and found one for 100 dollars on eBay (compared to 80 of the SuperDrive).

Has anyone used an aftermarket burner with the 2011 Mini? Thanks.

This is the model I'd like to use:

Anybody?

I would stay away from buying add ons or peripherals from eBay because there is no guaranty they will work. And always a pain returning something if it doesn't pan out.

If you want to find out what will work with your Mini, check with the folks at Other World Computing. They're Mac specialists, have an 800 number, and top of the line equipment. LINK

That is crazytalk by the salesman. Any generic USB DVD drive will work fine, I looked at them a ton when I was pondering ditching my Pro for a server Mini. The same thing applies to Blu Ray drives, still kicking around making that transition.

Agree, what a load of bull that is.
Check out any of them, Plextor are widely regarded as being among the best and most reliable.

Alright, thanks guys. Would seem strange for them to do that, even for Apple. Wonder why he said that? From what I hear, the Apple SuperDrive is pretty crap, with the super short cable and overpriced too. Does that Panasonic I mentioned in the eBay link seem decent? 99 bucks, how can you go wrong?

Not sure about the Panasonic. I know iMacs used optical drives made by Panasonic's parent company (Matsushita, their name usually triggers the forums word filter) and I never really liked them.

I agree with Kevin, Plextor drives are great.
