On my iPad, it would really be nice if I could read two PDFs side-by-side. Is this possible?

It's a good suggestion, but that app is basically a web browser, and I need to use another app for PDF annotations.

Does anyone know if it's going to be possible to have two programs open and visible at the same time? I would really like this feature, as opposed to buying a second iPad...

It may be possible one day. For now, it's not possible nor has Apple ever indicated that it would be possible. I'm sure someone could develop an app to show two PDFs side-by-side in one app, but as far as I can tell, no one has yet. It's probably a function of limited demand and limited productive value due to the screen size. You could try scouring the App Store to see if it's a listed feature in any PDF readers.
