I want to do a project by using 1N4003 diode, but it was broken accidently. What replacement is suitable?

A very specific question that you will not get much help here on. You might want to try a hardware-centric forum. Not even sure where the diode is.

Sounds like you're talking about a "substitute" diode (something that's similar but not exactly the same part). A "replacement" would be getting the exact same diode (1N4003 in this case).

If this is true...my question would be why is a substitute needed...why not source an exact replacement (and replace like for like)?

Like Nick said.
The 1N400x diodes are very common diodes, I typically use the 1N4004 for all applications.
The difference between the 1N4003 and 1N4004 is basically the reverse breakdown voltage, 200 volts peak vs 400 volts peak.
Other parameters are essentially the same.
Maybe a 1N4004 is easier to find than a 1N4003 since it's more popular.

Like Nick said.

Personally I only keep 1N4007 1000V rectifier diodes, used as low voltage rectifiers for low current semiconductor circuitry to high voltage power supplies for valve (tube) circuitry. The 1N400X series diodes can sometimes be used as varicap diodes, not sure if the capacitance range varies a little with voltage rating. Certainly the 1N4004 is much more common than the 1N4003. Where in your projects circuitry is the 1N4003 used?
