Came across this laptop from Sony today. 13.3" Xbrite widescreen, up to 120gb hdd, dual-layer DVD burner, a/b/g wifi, up to 2.16ghz Core Duo cpu, up to 2gb ddr2-533 ram, webcam, bluetooth, 128mb NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400, etc. Even has some nifty features like a fingerprint scanner as well as the new ExpressCard slot. I sure hope Apple comes out with a contender for it soon :)

Hmm, the starting price is $1449, I think the iBook will try to stay closer to the $1000 price range. I think this could be somewhat close though.

It's good to see SONY taking on the Express Card, MacBooks won't be the only one's with them at least.

Heh, I wonder what the next iBook line will be called. I can see the 17" being called the BigMac lol...

Consider Dell and HP had systems out with ExpressCard slots before the MacBook was even announced, I don't think you have anything to worry about in regard to it becoming an industry standard.

1280x800, a pretty standard WXGA resolution, prefect for a screen that size.

Hmm.

I think you could be pretty productive with a resolution like that. multiple pages open next to eachother on a widescreen, you think?

There are still applications whose windows are only 640x480? ;)

haha, now that I think about it, that did sound funny.

You know what I mean..the current iBook and it's crappy resolution isn't enough to run two full pages next to eachother, you know? I found myself cussing out expose alot and cussing at myself, wishing I had a bigger screen as to put a word and excel document next to eachother comfortably.

Whew, sounds better now.

Think a 13.3 WS with that resolution could do that?

The best thing is to always hook it up to an external monitor :)

Of course it could if you downsized the zoom of the windows. Then again, you could do that with the current iBooks too if so inclined. For true side-by-side page widescreen glory with no hindrances, 1680x1050 is the way to go. Of course, my 1440x900 does that function well for most things too. It's just the webpages that are large which bother me.

Right, but what about when you're at the university library? Drag along a 17" monitor? :dive:

Well, you know how the Titanium 15" powerbook was the first to really tout 2 fullscreen pages next to eachother? That's what I mean. And heck, I only have a 1152x768 resolution.

Technically, would a 13.3 WS at 1280x800 give me more screen real-estate than a 15.2 @ 1152x768?

I have a 15.4" widescreen laptop with a resolution of 1280x800; in my opinion, it's the perfect balance of resolution and readability. Originally I was planning on upgrading to a 14" widescreen laptop for portability (my 15.4" laptop weights 7.5 pounds!), but the new MacBook Pro only weighs 5.6 pounds, so I'll either go with that or a 13.3" Apple notebook if they become available. Also, the MacBook Pro is only 1" thick, as opposed to my 1.6" 'thin' Gateway laptop. Anyway, 1280x800 on a 14" widescreen laptop is a great resolution as well.

Here's looking forward to Apple's resolution-less GUI :mac:

I wouldn't mind that. I don't mind a smaller screen, as long as I can fit lots of stuff on there. I have eyes like a hawk, so a super duper high resolution doesn't bother me.
