this new os does 2 funny things. first it is slow to open the contents of a folder- never saw that before. second i get error messages about preview not being open- also unheard of in old os

Did you use the upgrade option to install or did you backup with time machine then do a fresh install.

Yosemite doesn't like upgrades to well a fresh installation is recommended
