I've been readying my old iMac on the fly for a week now and made decent progress moving files to my new iMac. Got all my fonts saved to a portable HDD, a few apps that I like, and I'm getting close to the point where I can purge the old iMac's HDD and reinstall OS X. Never done this before so its a new adventure LOL. When I finish, I'm OK with the system booting up as a plain jane fresh install, as I'm not including any software other than what's normally on a iMac. I assume that I'll have to demonstrate the machine to anyone interested and that requires an OS right? A new buyer could reset it all over and start from scratch. One question... what OS will it reinstall, the original late 2007 OS or the current ElCapitan?

If anyone has any links to an easy-to-understand How-To I'd appreciate it. Likewise, any advice on pre-purge or post-purge tips/tricks are welcome as well.

TIA... Mike

The only thing I would add to what Apple says is that for any registered software, look to see if it needs to be de-registered before you uninstall it. Adobe and MicroSoft products are usually in that category, but there may be others.

Really a simple search for; What to do before I sell my Mac, will turn up a step by step proceedure. Unfortunately they often overlook the fact that it could be an older model with an earlier operating system. Randy's first reference link is a good one.
