I recently just upgraded my iPhone 7 to the Xr using the trade in program thru apple. but before I upgrade any of my iPhones I always back them up to my computer. I don't have enough iCloud storage nor do I want to pay for the upgraded storage. I brought my new iPhone back home and plugged it into my MacBook. upon trying to restore my new iPhone to my most recent backup, I was unable to. I was greeted with the message saying "this iPhone cannot be backed up because your old iPhone was not on the lastest iOS update." so I was forced to set up my xr as a new phone. the only thing that matters to me is the 1000+ photos and videos I had on my iPhone 7. is there any way I can view the backed up photos I have saved on my Mac?

You might want to give the program iMazing a try. From this article it looks like that will do what you want to do. There is also a smilar program called iExplorer that should do the trick. Neither program is free but Imazing can often be found in softwre bundles at a pretty good savings. I believe both have free trials. I've used both and prefer iMazing but your view may be differemt,

I have no connection with either program other than being a happy customer.

Is your PC using winOS or macOS? Did you specifically back up or sync your old iPhone photos to your computer? See here for what is included in iOS backups, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204136.

Please do not take anything I say as accusatory or offensive - I was just wondering how an iPhone 7 wasn't running the latest iOS. I think that even a 5S, certainly a 6, is capable of running iOS 12.x. Was there a reason for holding back on the latest iOs which has been out for many months now?

And what you experienced is, I'm afraid to say, the industry standard. You cannot backup a new iPhone with the latest iOS from a BU from an earlier iOS.

I, like Moderator Slydude, am a great fan of iMazing 2. So a double recommendation.

However, I was just wondering - if you used iTunes to BU your iPhone 7 and if you still own the i7; you could connect the i7 to iTunes via a USB and upgrade to the latest iOS. Then create a new BU.

Then restore your iPhone XR to factory setting (as if new) and then restore it from the i7 BU.

And just as last thought, for £0.79 or 99cents (US) per month you can get 50GB of iCloud storage. That's equivalent to less than half a cup of coffee per month:)

Thanks Ian. The process you outlined of connect the iPhone 7, updating the OS, then restoring to the new phoe was the process I was trying to remember. I did it a few months go because my older phone was running an IOS 12 beta and the new phone wasn't obviously.

I think he used the trade in offer Ian. So he no longer has it.

What I don't understand is why he didn't download the photos onto his computer first. Maybe it was a Windows PC but if it was a Mac you almost have to actively stop Photos from downloading your photos.

There is some hope of retrieving your photos after all. This site https://www.imyfone.com/ios-data-recovery/view-iphone-backup-files/
Promotes an app which claims to allow you to view and save the contents of a backup. I cannot contest to the validity of their claims but it might be worth a look. I cannot think of any other way to access a backup and I have never heard of this app but if it works we'd love to hear back from you.
