Hello, I am brand new to Macs. I am trying to download something and I have heard I need to use the "GO" file to do that. I cannot for the life of me find the GO tab. I have looked under the Apple icon in the top left and the Finder thing. I took some screenshots to show you what I see, but incidentally I also do not know how to change the file type on Mac... how do I convert the PNG to a JPEG?

Thank you

Can you tell us a bit more about the file you are trying to download and where it is coming from? There is a Go menu in the Finder, where you are when the Mac fist boots and you log into your account, but that menu option is not usually needed to start a download.

I also thought it seemed strange to need the Go option. I am downloading and interactive Anatomy software from my school and these are the only instructions I have.

OK I see what you need to do now. Rather than using the Go menu lets do it this way:

1. Start by pressing the Command and K keys simultaneously.
2. There should be a little window that appears type in the ftp address then click Connect
3. Follow directions for connecting as a registered user.

You couldn't find the Go menu because the directions aren't 100% cirrect. If you are in the Finder, same place you took the screenshot, the Go menu is at the very top of the screen.

Oh my gosh YES there's the Go menu... thank you so much...

Although Command + K does not bring up anything, nothing happens when I do it. Is it different functions on different computers? I am on the new MacBook Pro

You're welcome.

I'm not sure what's going on with that command. Did you do it with or without the plus sign. It needs to be done without it.

Kudos on figuring out how to do the screenshot.

Took me a couple of tries to get the Cmd and K key combination to work myself but on an empty desktop it did and in Mojave (Dark Mode) it looks like this. Note the "new" option to save favorite ftp addess'.

This also works in macOS Sierra and macOS High Sierra.

In my case, I clicked on GO and "Connect to Server" is the last option in the drop down list. I get the same as in your screenshot, Rod.

PS I agree with Patrick. Maybe Admin or Mod can block out (or totally remove) the Name & Password. In effect, there is nothing anyone from signing in as the OP and downloading the stuff.

This is actually very very very easy to do using the built in Apple Utility app called "Preview".:)

As an example...screenshots taken with the macOS are saved as "PNG" files. To convert these PNG files to JPEG...all that's needed to be done is:

- Open the file with Preview (many times this will be the default app anyway).
- From the "File" drop down menu select "Duplicate".
- Then choose "Save" from the File drop down menu.
- Change the file type from PNG to JPEG.
- Name the file what you want.
- Click "Save".

Easy!:)

Or alternatively, for the third step, choose "Export..." and change the file type. It will already be named as it was originally.

Or did Apple remove that option as they did with the old "Save As..." option with the latest macOS versions???

"Export" is still there...and using Export probably is easier/faster/simpler.:)

I generally choose "Duplicate" when I don't want to modify the original file. Yes...I always liked the "Save As" command as well.:)

It's still there in all of Apple's native apps including Preview. Just hold down the Option key and "Save" becomes "Save As".

Son of a gun!!! Thanks Ian.

2019 Mac Rule to self = learn to push option or alternate keys in dropdown menus. Just might find some extra useful goodies. ;D
