No TM is not connected. Hasn't been connected to an external drive for at least one year. Screen shots hopefully. /Users/peterchisteckoff/Desktop/Screen Shot 2019-01-08 at 2.21.10 AM.png/Users/peterchisteckoff/Desktop/Screen Shot 2019-01-08 at 2.20.44 AM.png

I know the TM External drive is Not connected, but in System Preferences, Time Machine is Backup Automatically checked? What version is your Mac OS?

Partitioned my HDD into 6 different partitions. 5 of 200GB each and two of 100GB each. Now the jm partition is in a 100GB partition. I wanted to free up space on my HDD. Now the jm partition is not hogging the whole 1TB HDD. All the other partitions are empty. Not sure if this will speed up my startup, but worth a try if only temporarily until someone can hopefully help solve this.

Is Backup Automatically checked? That is important if it is.

Ok that answers my question. TM in High Sierra, if that Backup Automatically is Checked and the External TM drive is not hooked up, backs up to the internal drive. That is what is taking all your space! I would connect the TM drive and let it back up then when you remove the TM external. UNCHECK that Backup Automatically.

Wouldn't the TM backups show on my internal drive? It shows I'm only using 82.4 GB of my 1 TBHDD. The full reading on my HDD was because the subfolder was using all of the 1 TB. Shows it on the screen shot. But I will reconnect the TM backup.

No can't see them. Tried to attach them using the square icon, but that did not work. Dragged them to my post, but unable to open the screenshots that show there[ Screen Shot 2019-01-08 at 2.20.44 AM.png ]29049[/ATTACH]. Any suggestions of how I can add the screenshots to a post? Screen Shot 2019-01-08 at 2.21.10 AM.png Uploaded the files so something loads up as shown here. Not sure if anybody will be able to see.

And also as I suspected, your internal drive has been renamed to "jm," maybe by the cat. All it takes to rename a drive is for the name to be highlighted, then keys pressed, and then the cursor moved away from the highlighted names. And as has been said already, the snapshots are probably what's eating up all your space. They are hidden files, so you won't see them, and they are also system files, so they don't show as used space in every display. The assumption is that because you have TM turned on, you mean for these backups to take place, so they make the snapshot, wait for the drive to be reattached to put them into the backup.

Also, as an aside, you have NOT partitioned that drive into multiple areas, there is ONE partition, named "jm" on it. And it is the full 1TB (well, actually 999.35 GB), with 82.71 GB used and 916.64 available, some of which (maybe most) is in snapshots. Not sure what you think you did that you talked about in post #23. Maybe you should give us more information on what you did to make you think you had repartitioned the drive.

So, how to fix? Well, one way is to right click on the "jm" drive on your desktop, then select Get Info. In the resulting window, at the bottom is a small lock, click it and give an admin password. Now you can go back up to where it says "Name & Extension" and where the drive is named and change it back to "Macintosh HD" and that should do it. And then attach the TM backup drive and click on the TM icon in the top menu bar and "Back Up Now" to make a backup. It will take quite a while, so let it run. At the end of the backup it will delete almost all of the snapshots, but it might keep one, depending on how long the backup takes.

Thanks for the info. It worked. I then closed the lock.
Are you saying that after i do the TM backup, Almost all hidden TM backup files will be deleted from my HD? This should speed up my startup hopefully and eliminate the beachballs.
Sorry for the partition confusion. I did indeed partition the HDD into 4 200GB and 2 100GB drives in hopes of speeding up my startup. But while waiting for responses from my post, I decided to revert back to avoid confusion. Should have mentioned that in my post. Thanks again for alll the help

Normally, partitioning destroys the data on the drive, so if you did partition it that way, the backups may be gone. In any event, if there are snapshots, and if you do attach the backup drive and run Time Machine, then, yes, at the end it will delete the snapshots because they are no longer needed. The data is now incorporated into the backup.

TM has been continually connected. Clicked TM icon on my desktop, but there is no "Back Up Now" option that I can see.

TM has been continually connected.
I am thoroughly confused by this entire thread. You said in post #11:
TM is not connected and has not been for some time.
But now you say it is continually connected. Can't be both, has to be one or the other. So, rather than guess, why don't you say which it is.

Ah, ok, so now we narrow in on reality.

Several things, there should be a TM icon on the top bar which, when clicked, has a menu, one item of which is Back Up Now. But that only appears if the backup drive is mounted. So if it's not there, the backup drive is not mounted.

Also, in System Preferences.Time Machine make sure "Show Time Machine in menu bar" is checked so that the icon WILL be in the top bar, if it is not there.

There is also a TM icon on the Dock, across the bottom (or side) of the screen. If you right click that, a menu will appear with "Back Up Now" as an item, if the backup drive is attached and mounted.

Mis type should be: TM is NOW connected... I connected TM after finding out my backups were going to my HDD. "Show Time Machine in menu bar" was not checked. It now is. My TM HDD shows on my desktop when it is connected. It has been connected since I was advised to do that. Did not recognize the TM icon in the menu bar. Found it and now backing up now. I was trying to do the backup from the TH HD.
Thanks again. Now to take this in and have my 1TB HDD replaced by a 256GB SSD.

FYI, Time Machine, will store snapshots on the internal drive, unless you disable that feature.

I believe Bob is referring to using this command from Terminal in order to disable snapshots: sudo tmutil disablelocal

Take note however, if your internal hard drive is formatted to APFS, that command no longer works. Local snapshots will be stored on your drive whether or not the Time Machine drive is attached. You must manually delete the snapshots if you want to remove them.
