Hi everyone
Last week I purchased Toast Titanium 17 for my Mac with the intention of converting my old video productions from DVD (.VOB) back into an editable format. Unfortunately toast is failing to do it's job. I've tried using various formats that are compatible with my editing software Final Cut Pro X. The H.264 codec would be best however I keep on getting a -50 mac error as the conversion completes. When I use the MPEG-4 and Quicktime movie codec the audio slips out of sync. When trying the Digital Video (DV) option Toast unexpectedly quits altogether. Ironically the MKV codec works fine but is incomparable with FCP X. Needless to say I'm at a complete loss having explored all the viable options including the numerous phone and web presets.

As well a this issue I’m also failing to create a DVD disk image from HD Quicktime files with the codec H.264. In this cace I’m getting a -111 Mac error. I’ve sent off appeals for help to their customer support to no avail.

I’m using a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) by the way running MacOS High Sierra (10.13.6). Perhaps it’s the OS that is causing the complications?

Please any advice and help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A very warm welcome to our Forums, Charles.

As a long time user of Toast Titanium, and having version 17, I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t have a practical answer.

However, if your primary aim is to alter the format of your videos to a more user-friendly one; how about trying VLC a free app for the Mac which plays just about every format invented and can covert formats as well.

As I’m on holiday, I can’t provide a direct link to the developer’s site; but if you Google VLC, and download direct from the developer, videolan, you can try it out.

Please post back. Replies are a little slow because of the holidays.

Thank you very much for your reply to my plea for help Ian. I really appreciate it. I actually have the VLC player on my Mac already. It comes as a complete surprise to hear that it has that capability. I've just, thanks to you discovered the Streaming/Transcode Wizard and will try and figure it out. Time to RTFM. Thank you very much again for your assistance.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'll most certainly be visiting and partaking in discussions now I'm a member and have had such informative and helpful advice. Likewise to you Ferrarr. I'll definitely look into Handbreak too. I'm open to all options in order to work out the best and easiest results. As a matter of interest and because I was working to a very tight deadline I ended up using the shareware app Burn in conjunction with Toast and got a successful result with regards it's accepting the newly transcoded files and not crashing when writing a disk image. A bit convoluted but successful in the end.

I'm glad to hear that Burn.app is still working well, or at least helping out, and I gave up using Toast somewhere after Roxio's version 6.x I think it was.

Lately it seems to have gone through several owners and it's recent versions sure don't get much in the way of accolades.

Sonic Solutions acquired Roxio in 2003, going on to acquire Simple Star and CinemaNow in 2008. Rovi Corporation acquired Sonic Solutions in 2010, but Rovi announced in January 2012 that it would sell Roxio to the Canadian software company Corel. That acquisition closed on February 7, 2012.

Maybe Ian and others have better luck with Toast 17 than some others and what they have to say, especially regarding the Toast 17.x version:

Anyway, welcome aboard and glad to read you got your project completed. I gather that Burn could not have done the project on its own.

PS to Ian: I hope you're having a nice holiday wherever it is you have roamed to.

Patrick, I had great luck with Toast 11 but now that Corel has purchased it, problems. I used 11 for years and decided to take them up on their offer for $59 and get toast 16. Big mistake. I do a lot of Video conversion/Burning for a friends business. All his videos were in Mpeg4. I let toast convert then burn and the picture was all jerky and any movement of people it looked like they were going backwards for a second! :D If the file was MOV it was fine but that conversion step hurt the quality of my friends videos. I talked to so called Corel Tech support and got no where. They this person from Corel kept emailing me suggestions. I tried them all and nothing fixed the issue. If I went back to Toast 11 all was fine. So after almost a month of back and forth I demanded my $$$ back. They did refund me.

Really sad Toast has gotten this way. I am scared to try 17 and after this thread think I will stick with 11 as it's still working in Mojave!!

Forgot to mention, there was a long thread on the Corel forums about the same exact issue I was having with so many having my issue yet it fell on deaf ears and they said we were using it wrong! :D Grin

That's the second really good app that Corel managed to screw up. The first one was Wordperfect and now Toast. Corel should stick to their famous paint app and forget the others.

Gee, I had forgotten that, and another loss for Mac users for what was an excellent application.

I used to use Word Perfect on my early PCs till Corel bought them. Such a shame with Toast also. I used that back in the days of my Mac Plus and SE with an external SCSI CD burner. those were the good old days.

Thank you Patrick for your comments to my plight and the links you've provided.
Yes indeed the Burn app was way too basic for my needs in particular it's lacking the ability to add in chapter markers. That and the menu it produced was inaccessible. The means by which I eventually achieved success are very long winded and, quite frankly, mind blowing. In particular I eventually succeeded by setting up a Quicktime export option with 'audio only' and got both picture and audio that, ironically both worked. It was then that I had to run that file through Burn, compressing it to mpeg 2, in order for me to then produce my disk image in Toast without it crashing. Sounds very confusing I have to admit and stumbled upon this solution quite by accident through fiddling with all the settings. Necessity sure is the mother of invention.
I'm, putting it mildly, mortified at what's happened to Toast as I used to rely on it for many moons before Apple made my computer obsolete (A topic I'm going to broach on another thread one day). My exacerbation is made all the more acute by their utter lack of technical support. Totally cringe worthy.

Well Charles, I'd say you have a pretty good handle and understanding on how things are supposed to work and and an ability to work around them when they don't.

But it does sound like we have another Apple Cringe Story coming up in the future when you get around to writing it, and I must admit I was intrigued by your hometown name and had to rely on Google Maps to have a look at what it looks like and where it is located.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you were able to get your project completed properly. Congratulations.

Thank you for your kind words Patrick. I really appreciate them. Yes I often feel like I'm fighting a losing battle but somehow pull through in the end. Unnoticed until now thanks to this wonderful platform. Tenacity is one of my God given traits having lived in Africa since my life. Yes my upcoming tale of woe is one to beheld so will put a lot of thought into it's writing.
Wishing you a very happy New Year my new found forum friend.

Charles, welcome to Mac Forums.

You probably read of my similar issues with Toast 17 above. I am glad I still own Toast 11 as that works great for conversion before burning. When I got the refund from Corel on Toast 17 I bought Wondershare DVD Creator as it looked good on paper. Only issue with it is like Burn, no Chapter markers. I wrote them and was assured that would soon be added but it's been 1 year and still no update. Sad. I just hope Toast 11 continues to work on future versions of Mac OS.

Happy New Year to you.

I burned a disk of my Mother's photos for her funereal and family members several years ago, complete with Chapter markers, so I just did a quick Google search for 'mac dvd Chapter markers' and was surprised to see the feature seems to have been dropped in a lot of the related software but at least I was relieved to see they are still available using some software.

https://www.google.com/search?q=mac...57j69i64l2.14822j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

One apple discussion site had some good suggestions that were still working in 2017 so I guess there's still a bit of Hope left at the end of the tunnel that the feature hasn't died out completely:

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!

And Harry and some other Aussies are already celebrating the New Year. But then again, he always said he was always well ahead of the crowd.

No doubt getting the Barby or BBQ pit ready to cook the New Year's Day meal or at least a bangers and eggs breakfast.

Thanks Dennis. Yes your input didn't go unnoticed and in all honesty was going to get around to acknowledging you. I'm definitely going to explore the possibility of a refund. In part at least. It gets complicated in light of the fact that I still need Toast and yet, crazy ironic, need your earlier version of 11. I won't even attempt to look into how to go about that without delving into the world of piracy and the dark web. Something I'd rather not discuss on this open platform. Wishing you a very happy New Year and many happy returns.
