    need help with laser printers
Does anyone have any experience with a good laser monochrome printer that is mac compatible and will print clear monochrome images without dither(horizontal lines/multiple tonal shades every few mm) throughout image? I have no interest in going inkjet. I have no need for full color, though if I have to, I will shell out for something expensive as apparently even midrange color laser printers don't print clear images.

    Welcome to our forums.

Brother makes some very good B&W Laser printers which are Mac compatible. They're inexpensive on initial purchase and the laser cartridges for them are easily obtained from on line resellers at a discounted price. I have an older HP Laser printer which I use but nowadays I can not say whether they (HP) still make quality Laser printers. There are other makes of B&W laser printers such as Canon and Epson. But overall, I recommend Brother.

Just returned a $100 brother; they won't print clear monochrome images. They do text well, but for what ever reason, they are no longer producing low or mid range monochrome laser printers capable of printing clear gray scale or black and white images.

@ Jake.... - also a warm welcome to the forum! Just to support the recommendation above, I usually have an inkjet & monochrome laser printer in our computer area; for the latter, wife & I have had the Brother printers - the current one is shown below which I bought 4 years ago (a newer model is available) - the printing is excellent and fast! However, I've not done a lot of 'images' but will likely satisfy your needs - our printer is on the Wi-Fi network, so no cable - has worked well (I often print wirelessly from my iPad and/or laptops in the den) - this is probably our 3rd Brother printer (even had a Brother 'daisy-wheel' back in the 80s or so?) - SO, just a thumbs up to Charlie's comments - Dave

Not going inkjet. I would state my reasons, but I'm not up for a debate on why laser is superior. I worked in a copy shop in the late 90's and got to work with inkjet before you could buy it in the store. Watching an ignorant public being sold on inkjet vs laser over the cost of the printers remains one of the most tragic experiences I will ever remember. The newer model of that brother printer is one i just returned. I called apple support first. They had no clue, said to call brother. I did. They suggested i buy a new drum after already buying a back up toner cartridge and then pray. Kind of joke getting help from apple or brother. This printer will not print clear black and white images on mac os mojave 10.14. Tomorrow I'm going to an actual printer repair shop where i can see what the laser printers, monochrome and color can actually do based on price point.

It seems to me that you're not in the market for an inexpensive laser printer which the Brother is. Any laser printer that is used to print high quality, high resolution images is probably going to be more expensive. The so called higher quality laser printers are more expensive because they're faster, have the ability to print on wider formats, and can print two sided, collate, etc.

One of the difficulties in finding a suitable printer is that some resellers do not accept printer returns. Also, not sure why you first called Apple when having difficulty printing images on the Brother?

Because Brother Tech support was closed. What burns me is that i just hooked up a 20 year old monochrome to a family member's new dell running windows 10. Beautiful monochrome print outs. It would appear that i will have to shell out $1,000 or more for a full color laser printer to get the same monochrome quality as a 20 year old "antique". As far as I am concerned, Apple deserves all the scorn the public wants to push its way for failure to support older printers which are clearly superior to the new crap being churned out. Basically my question has been answered at this point. Time to start looking at $1,000+ color laser printers. Almost enough to make me switch back to windows.... almost.

Hate to sound like a fnboy here here goes. I fail to see how this is an Apple issue for not suporting a 20 year old printer. The decision to support/not support a given OS and for how long is made by the printer manufacturer. Some 20-year-old antiques work with current Macs. Check this page to see if printers you are interested in are supported by the Gutenprint Project printer drivers.

Hate to sound like i know more about printers than a fnboy, but i do. Since i have a lifetime of experience using windows, i'd say i'm in a pretty good position to judge the inferiority of mac printing software and drivers compared to windows. The problem is two fold, the ignorant masses love for inkjet which has pushed tech in that direction instead of superior laser printer improvements and apple not willing to support printers even 5 years old. Not looking for an antique, just looking not to spend more on a printer than I did on my mac to have quality laser monochrome images. Again, one aspect of mac that apple deserves major ridicule over. And, not to beet a dead a horse, but i specifically asked for those with experience with monochrome printers compatible with mac that could print clear monochrome images. Thus far, a single person has yet to step forward and claim that such a machine exists beyond top shelf price points. A bit disappointed. Apple needs to work on this problem. Beating a dead horse twice, my question has been answered.

Well, let's see..... my HPLJ 1012 is now 12 years old and still supported by Apple. My Epson NX 420 is 7 years old and still supported.

HP Laserjet 1012 is a Ink Jet? NO LaserJet is an ink Jet.

My family has a very expensive but old Monochrome Laser Jet. Don't remember the model and I can not look right now as it's in a room where people are sleeping but it was around $400. It's 10 years old or around. I tried for hours and every supposed driver for Windows 10 did nothing. Plugged it into my IMac with High Sierra and bang, found it and installed a driver without me doing a thing.
