How do I get rid of an unwanted pop up that keeps wanting me to download Flash Player? I am on an iMac running OS 10.14.2, and use Safari as a browser. Even when I try to switch sites the pop up shows up. I have Ghostery installed but that doesn't stop it,

Go to the app store and get Ghostery Lite. It should block almost everything, including popups.

Jake, When I try to buy Ghostery Lite using Pay Pal I keep getting a run around. Is there another way I can buy it?

Sorry, I don't understand. All you need to do is to go to the App store (Click on the , upper left corner, then "App store..." and it will open. In the search block type Ghostery and it will appear. Paypal isn't involved in the transaction at all.

Jake, Ghostery Lite costs a few bucks. The site wants me to use Pay Pal to buy it. The run around happens when I try to use Pay Pal to buy it. How do I use a credit card instead of Pay Pal?

Are you going to the App store? Don't go directly to Ghostery, just get it from the App store. No need to go to Ghostery at all.

I just installed it from the macOS App Store, there was no payment required. When in Safari, click on Safari in the top menu bar, then select "Safari Extensions...". This will open the App Store for you.

I see what the problem is. The Apple ID is an old one. How do I change to my current Apple ID?

Log out of the store (Open the Store, Click on "Store" on the top bar and the bottom item of the menu is "Sign out") then enter your current AppleID and sign in.

Worked like a champ. Thank you very much Jake. Now I have to find it on my Safari page. I see Ghostery but not Ghostery Lite.

That's where it is Jake. With Ghostery I saw a little icon on my Safari page. I uninstalled Ghostery but I don't see the little icon anymore. I guess I will wait to see if the bothersome pop up wanting me to download Flash Player doesn't show up anymore.

Well, I have Ghostery disabled and Ghostery Lite enabled and I have a little ghost on my top bar of Safari which opens to Ghostery Lite. In Safari, Preferences, Extensions there are two Ghostery Lite items, one for "Ghostery Lite UI" and the other for "Ghostery Lite Content Blocker 1.0.0" and both are checked. I think the UI is the one that triggered the icon to appear.

I see the little Ghoster Lite icon after I restarted. Thank you very much Jake. Merry Christmas.

More bad news Jake. Ghostery Lite did not stop the pop up that wants me to download Flash Player

Did you configure it? Did you enable it? (Safari>Preferences>Extensions, put clicks beside both to enable. Click on the ghost icon in Safari to configure it.

Also, look at System Preferences to see if there is an icon for Flash. If there is, then Flash is installed on your system and you can elect to update from there. The pop up may, if you have Flash installed, be coming from that source, not Safari, but would be triggered by Safari if the site wants to play Flash and your Flash is out of date. If there is no icon in System Preferences for Flash, then get AdBlock+ and see if that will block the popup. I'm really surprised that Ghostery didn't block it.

There is a flash player icon in system preferences. How do I delete it?

You don't have to delete it. Click on it, have it check for updates to your Flash player and if there is an update, install it and the pop ups will end. What is happening is that every time Flash is invoked, it warns that you need a update. Not from Safari, from ANY Flash (but most of the time it is something in the website). If you don't want it, you can uninstall Flash and that icon (and the pop ups) will go away. There should be a folder in Applications for Adobe and inside that is an uninstaller, as I recall.
