Is it advisable to add apple care to a purchase of a new iMac?

Absolutely.

You get one year warranty, but I would always advise paying the extra for AppleCare Plus which not only extends the warranty to three years for an iMac but also includes Genius Bar teaching sessions, close to 24 hour phone advice and more.

The number of times the phone help has assisted me is uncountable. You get to speak to a human and that person sticks with you till the problem is solved or passes you over to a more senior tech person.

Can’t recommend it more highly.

A very personal view this: but if you can’t afford the extra cover, you can’t afford the computer.

Ditto my view on backups and the external drives you need for them.

Back in the day there used to be just AppleCare and that was purchasable before the first year anniversary of your purchase date to extend the warranty to an additional 2 years. Now there is AppleCare+ that does everything AppleCare used to do and add damage protection as well. The BIG change is that you have to purchase this within 60 days of purchasing your Apple product. Beyond that, I'll second everything Ian said.

And today's Apple products are very difficult to get into and do repairs, so the cost of a repair at a shop is going to go up. AppleCare+ is the one warranty that I do purchase every time.

Highly recommended. I've already used AppleCare on my two year old iMac, black smudges behind the screen. They replaced the screen at no charge. :)

I think a lot of the time it's not that people can't afford it, but they're afraid they'll pay for it and never need to use it. But of course that's the nature of "insurance," isn't it? When pricing computers, people ought to factor the cost of Apple Care into the price, that way it doesn't feel like an "add-on." It's all psychological, of course :)

@Kenny:

Just like your American Express Card: "Don't leave home without it!"

I buy it for all my Apple products. And like Ian pointed out, the telephone support alone makes it a worthwhile investment. ;D

Thanks to all for your advise and personal experiences. This is why I really love THIS site, willingness to share experiences and a help someone. I know I've asked a lot of questions recently and again thanks to all that have helped me in the right direction on my first iMac purchase. Just want to look up close to one so next week wednesday my brother and I are going to a apple store. Unfortunately the closest store is about 1 1/2 hrs away. Then the order goes in. :)

Instead of traveling 1 ½ hours to the nearest Apple Store, you can order by phone direct to Apple or order on line. My Apple Store is only 15 minutes away but I still order on line. Of course if you wish to try out a particular model Mac in person, then you have no choice but to head to your nearest Apple Store. Be advised, Apple Stores are usually crowded especially at this time of year. Go on a week day afternoon. Avoid going on a weekend. ;D

Don't forget, you can "test" Macs at Best Buy too.

Don't forget you can often save a lot using the online Apple Refurbished Mac site. Even if you make the trip to "kick the tires" and select which model you want.

The savings will sure be more than enough to pay for the gas and a meal and drink. But Bob made a better suggestion just above using Best Buy or similar store that sells Macs in your area.

chscag, will order online just want to see and compair.

Bob, my local BB usually has 1 to look at and most help is with win, not real knowledgeable on iMac here anyway. Kinda the problem with living in "Mayberry" if you know what I mean, so of you older members may remember the Andy Griffith Show from the 60's.

Patrick, have been looking at refubrs but haven't seen one yet with what I'm looking for. I know this is a big investment and I figure I should get what I would like and enjoy it.

That makes sense, and maybe keep checking their iMac refurb page often and throughout the days as some models can arrive and disappear quite quickly, especially if they are sought after models.

Good luck.
