Hi to all, I am old, I am thick, I am stupid and illiterate and those facts are born out by the fact that I cannot get to grips with getting round the notice that " Your password is *** days old etc". I cannot get my old password to register nor can I get the temp one emailed to me to work. So with that I give up and say "Compliments of the season to everyone" I for one have had enough of the password saga and will remove myself from the forum; thank you all those who over the few years I have graced the forum who have spent their time helping me. I shall miss you all and also the assistance I have been graced with. Goodbye and best regards from Keith in Derby England.

For what it's worth. I've never run into an issue re-doing my password here at Mac-Forums. As long a someone keeps proper records (Mac-Forums userid, old Mac-Forums password, and correct email address used for Mac-Forums)...then updating account password only takes 10-15 seconds at most. Of course occasionally there may be a glitch. But the vast majority of folks seem to have no issues.:)

It could be the issue I was having, where the forum was generating the member ID in the "New email Address" box at the bottom? And it affected my saved login information. Which was why I had to change it every time I kept coming back to the forum, after I had changed it from the Mac-Forums email generated password.

Passwords are a pain.

We are either going to have a secure Mac-Forums site or one that is not secure and undergo the same problem with a data breach that our former owners had. If you think passwords are a pain then you don't need to be using a computer, or have a bank account, or have credit cards, etc. I could go on.

I have to agree with Nick. Changing a password takes no time at all if done correctly. Our members should know their user name, email address that we have on file, and of course their current password. Password managers are great and so is a little black book next to your computer. ;D

I thought you and Nick are the owners now? Penton does not run the site anymore, am I right?

Penton no longer owns this site. Enough said.

Not meant to be blunt. It's just something that we do not need to talk about. And there are threads in the community discussions forum which gave information about the forum's future and also the Facebook group. You can refer to those if you need more info.

I got the password change prompt a few days ago and it let me "change" my password to the same password as my current password. That's fine by me, but just in case that's a bug, I just wanted to put that out there.

Thanks for mentioning this Jonathan. The password change settings were tweaked a bit a couple days ago (maybe after you updated your PW). The system should not allow the previous password to be used as the new pasword.

Thanks again,

Yep, just tested it from my user settings and it doesn't let me do that now. Thanks for the info!

Getting back to Keith, don't give up. The password change is not that difficult. You get the message and do the change by entering the old password once, then the new password twice to verify it. The one thing that sort of stumped a couple of folks is that the system, for some reason, defaults your email into your login name when you do the update, so in addition to changing the password, you have to make sure that the Username is still the same. Nothing gets emailed to you, the password change is immediate and you don't get any other verification. So give it a try.

I had no problem changing my password a couple of days back.

But trying to log in this morning with the new one, I got the message that my PW or ID were wrong, and that I'd exceeded my number of incrrect login attempts (one!?!?) and had to wait 15 minutes before trying again with exacty the same details!!

Hmmm, I've had terrible problems the last few days trying to update. Noticed straight away that it posted email address. Finally back in but still won't allow me to change the temp password to something memorable. Think site started early on the Christmas booze, hic!

FWIW, my post did not say that having a password on this site is a pain. It said that passwords are a pain. They are, because you need so many, they need to be changed periodically. It's a pain. I was sympathizing with the OP.

I got the password change message too. And had some difficulties. I could get a new password fine and use it but had trouble changing it to something suitable for me. Keychain gives me 3 diffeent login/usernames/email addresses for this site and the differences between login name and email address causes a lot of confusion and 15 minute messages. I've had to write it all down in my secret little passwords book I keep under my pillow. So don't feel bad Keith. Just keep working on it.

(I tried to delete all the keychain stuff for this site to start fresh, but they look like they delete but are still there to automatically cause troubles). I am a bit computer literate, but I guess not.

Thanks for mentioning/confirming this Diane. We were wondering if "Keychain" might have been involved with some of the password change difficulties for some.
