    file vault
I have just bought a new iMac and noticed in the security some thing called file vault should I enable this what is the best way to protect access, via the encryption key that it generates or through iCloud.
    regards Ray

For normal home use machines, I would strongly recommend against enabling filevault. Filevault will encrypt the entire disk and requires proper credentials to access things. If things go awry, recovery is very hard and will likely end up causing you to lose what is not backed up elsewhere.

Fire Vault is great - if you are a former KGB Assassin.

And read posts where folk lose complicated passwords and are locked out of their computers.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.
