Hi, newbie here and my first post. I have a late 2011 macbook pro running the latest version of high sierra. I am getting the message that this version of mac os 10.14 cannot be installed on this computer. Is my laptop compatible to upgrade to Mojave.
In laymans terms why ?

In theory if you can run High Sierra as my wife's old late 2011 MBP was ( she just bought a new 2018 model) the 2012 model should be able to run Mojave. The question is how well? My wife's old MBP only had 4Gb RAM and would occasionally freeze if she had too many apps or to many tabs open on her browser. So processor speed on yours may not be able to fully take advantage of new features. Either way it is inevitable that software development will eventually result in operating systems which exceed the ability of old devices to run them.
I'd recommend you stick with the fully supported High Sierra until you can afford or need to upgrade your device to a later model. My experience is that 6-7 years is about the most you can expect out of a MBP any way, which is why my wife replaced hers.

You've already been told why. However, there are work arounds available if you really wish to run Mojave on your machine. Do a google search and you should find several that you can try. Be forewarned though, that these work arounds don't always work right and can cause some unusual effects to occur on your machine. So it's up to you....

Well, not to belabor the point, but you've already received great advice, i.e. your 'old' laptop is not compatible w/ Mojave - I'm debating an upgrade of my wife's late 2012 iMac which is on the fence - I'll likely not do and buy her a new machine next year. Thus, your main options at the moment are to live w/ High Sierra on your 2011 laptop or start saving for a new one, if you feel a need for the newest macOS. Dave :)

Have a read of this article by OS X Daily, a respected publisher giving helpful info for Mac users.

In particular, scroll to the bottom paragraph starting with *.

The intention of the article is to assist the few that find, for unknown reasons, that they get an incomplete, abbreviated version of macOS Mojave instead of the full version, but if you read carefully, you may find this helps you - at your own risk!

How to Download a Full Size MacOS Mojave Installer

Gee, I didn't realize that Apple had failed so much that the user needs to go to a Mac Help site to learn how to download an upgrade installer that's actually going to work properly. That's pretty sad state of affairs if I do say so myself, and a far cry from how things use to work many years ago.

What ever happened to their pride and the phrase: "It Just Works".

Or just include that problem with some of the others that too many are coming up against which is just too sloppy and poor testing on Apple's part IMHO.

This, amongst others is just too typical:
macOS 10.14 Mojave problems: how to fix them
https://www.techradar.com/how-to/macos-1014-mojave-problems-how-to-fix-them

Of course one doesn't get the other problems until they actually get Mohave downloaded and installed!! :Smirk:

Maybe I'm missing something, but the article appeared to say to me that both the "small 23 MB" installer and the "full 5.8 GB installer" work and that the majority of users get the full installer when downloading. So the only issue would be the few people who get the 23 MB installer but need the full-size one to make a bootable disc so they can do a clean install.

I personally just updated both my 2012 MBA and 2012 iMac last week and have experienced 0 issues. In fact, I don't recall ever having any major issues with each OS upgrade since Tiger (when I switched back to Mac after a long hiatus with Windows).

You gotta make allowances as Patrick is a real Apple knocker.

\Mohave works great and is the best OS for the last five years. It is fast, smooth and with a great U.I.

Yup, especially when they screw up and the users suffers, just like they did with last years High Sierra release and the serious bugs it had after so many had trouble even downloading it. Of course, all the super Apple "Fan Boys" will conveniently forget that, and yes, some got it to work OK, sort of, and after some updates.

Hopefully this year won't be as bad but I also give Apple praise when they earn it. Gads, they sure have enough money to put some resources into their upgrades so major goof-ups shouldn't even happen.

Yes well, if one of the major problems is that you didn't have enough storage space to download the installer in the first place what can I say? This is computers 101 stuff. Don't download on the first day a new macOS is released is another example. C'mon, you know the servers are going to be flat out. If you're trying to install an OS that is not compatible with your device, duh?
These are all user error issues not Apples fault.
The only real issue I can see in the Tech Radar article is the desktop thumbnails thing which I did have after changing to the GS release, not in the beta, easily solved in my case by emptying the icon cache, which OnyX will do for you, as soon as they release thier Mojave version or you can just do the start up in Safe Mode method.
All in all nothing to write home about, I had more problems with El Capitan.

If you were referring to any of my comments Rod, I don't include users who can't even read or go by the basic System requirements for any installation. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a great number of them for some odd reason.

Must be because Apple computers are so easy to use you don't even need to be able to read to "use" one.
I admit it, I'm a "fan boy" today. I'm loving Mojave, Dark Mode, Voice Memos, Desktop Stacks. Not to mention my new, price reduced Apple watch. Tomorrow that may all change.?

Mojave is a no brainer if your Mac can run it. Very easy update with little to no glitches.

However..... beware of the next update of macOS (10.15). No more 32 bit apps and if the rumor mill is halfway correct in their predictions, it will be one of those updates that will incorporate many new "ideas" from the boys at Cupertino. :p

As stated, I have a late 2011 15"macbook pro. 8 gigs memory, 500 gb hardrive with 468 gigs available . I guess as it was pointed out earlier my laptop is not compatible because apple says so.

Yep, just like my mid-2011 27" iMac, but it doesn't look like you don't even have too much data stored and maybe if like myself you don't even need any of the features from the latest Mac OS version. Have you checked to see if there's anything in the new OS that you really must have?

If so, maybe have a look at some of Apples more recent refurbished models they usually have available.

Actually, the answer to this isn't that "Apple says so... because they just want to screw you."

The true answer is: "In order to run the new macOS Mojave, Macs must have graphics hardware capable of supporting Metal, Apple's modern low-level, low-overhead software that provides access to graphics processing."

https://forums.appleinsider.com/dis...s-mojave-requires-metal-and-deprecates-opengl

Yes, it's amazing what one can see once they take the tin-foil hat off. If Apple really wanted to screw us, they would force us to buy a new Mac for every OS upgrade, not wait 6-7 years :)

Yes, an interesting time indeed. I counted up the number of 32bit apps I have currently and they number 16. I have to assume that developers are busily creating 64bit versions of their apps in preparation for 10.15 but I fear some may just drop off the twig. Somebody mentioned Solitaire Till Dawn in another thread recently, I would not be surprised if that is one of the casualties.
