Hello every-one, a few minutes ago I was wandering through my Apple iMac and noticed that "MacKeeper" has suddenly appeared in Finder/applications. Now I cannot for the life of me recall asking for this piece of software, it has arrived un announced and unasked for; maybe the computer has done an update on OS X (Now 10.13.6 but I cannot recall asking for it). I do not know the pedigree of MacKeeper but Malwarebytes has not warned me of anything bad; advice please about should I allow it to remain or should I delete it as undesirable?

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Mackeeper doesn't come with OS X/macOS and should absolutely be removed/uninstalled. You have to explicitly have had installed it at some point. Follow these instructions to remove all vestiges of this application.

HI pigoo and Raz0rEdge, I have looked in applications and MacKeeper is NOT listed but is in the Launchpad; I have tried to drag the icon into the trashcan but it will not stay in there. If I click on MacKeeper(but do not do anything with it) I have noticed that MalwareBytes reports it has done a scan and needs a restart. There is something cockeyed with this one. Have printed off " How to uninstall MacKeeper from your Mac" but the instructions do not seem to apply to my iMac, in other words MacKeeper is not in Applications folder and on the MacKeeper page I get on screen I cannot find the menu and consequently cannot select 'Preferences'. Sorry both of you helpers but I am completely lost as to what to do except allow the blasted thing just sit there unused or is that none action rather silly?? I forgot to say I have NOT requested this software at all, it has simply just appeared today.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Just as an FYI, Launchpad does show applications that have been installed into your "users" Application folder, and the "macOS" application folder. Look in your users folder to see if it is in there.

Hi, just had a thought; yesterday I downloaded 'BBC iPlayer'. I cannot see MacKeeper riding on that one and that is the only download that has been done for ages. Sadly it must have come with that BBC iPlayer download because that is all that I have downloaded for absolute ages.

Best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Hi everyone, I think I have deleted MacKeeper! I went into finder>library and searched 'MacKeeper'; I got a number of files which I dragged into the Trash, a game of patients as it took a while but nevertheless I got there and hopefully nothing remains on my computer. Thanks to Ferrari Raz0rEdge and pigoo.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Hi, just had a thought; yesterday I downloaded 'BBC iPlayer'.

Hey there Keith. I'm not saying 100% that this is what happened. But since you mentioned downloading "BBC iPlayer"...and I don't know where you downloaded it from. But there are many, many, many what I would call "generic" download sites out there. These are legitimate downloading sites for free, demo, or trial software.

Many times these legit download sites are CRAMMED with advertisments for many many products...and there are "download" buttons everywhere. Many times it's difficult to find the correct download button for the product you're looking to download.

For example...you may have wanted to download the "BBC iPlayer" app...and may have accidentially clicked on a "MacKeeper" download button inadvertently. Then MacKeeper may have auto-installed itself. This may have been how you ended up with MacKeeper.

Just a possibility.:)

Hi Nick (and everyone else), I thank you for your input and have replied via email as well. Things do tend to get on top of me these days and I put it down to old age! I am not the man I used to be, silly statement really but yesteryears man was a **** of a lot more tolerant of daily stress than I am now.

Thanks to every one who showed an interest, you are a wonderful crowd out there.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Ian, Can I have your permission to use that quote? I think it is absolutely wonderful and perfectly true.

Of course, my friend. I probably made it up from scraps of stuff I read. It just came to me one day when I was teaching some medical students and I had a senior moment. I excused myself with those words.

The plain truth of the matter with Mac Keeper is that they seem to have seeded the web with little download links that are innocuous and seemingly innocent that download elements of the app without your knowledge. It is as it has always been, insidious and invasive as well as hard to get rid of. A bit like the weeds in my lawn.

Keith, all is well. Just got back from a long trip. 28 days in UK, then an 11 day cruise home to the US. Didn't get to Derby this trip, sadly. I tell folks I have to grow old, but I don't have to grow up. I personally think if you feel young, you are young, despite what the body is doing. Keep moving, keep learning.

BTW, on another thread you mentioned cut/paste being foreign. I think of it this way: CMD-C is to "C"opy, then CMD-V is to paste (The V points down to say put it down.) I use the shortcuts all the time. Maybe that will help?
