I have a Numbers document that I update monthly. I updated it, but when I went to save it, a notice says "xxxxx.numbers could not be saved". I tried a Save As xxxxx2.numbers, but it would not allow that either. I went to Get Info, and it says I have custom access, and Read and Write Privilege. I went to other recent numbers documents and they save fine. Seems to be only this document. What gives? Mac OS 10.11.6

Could it be that the folder where you save it has had your permissions changed? Or the entire drive? Have you tried saving it to someplace totally different, like the Desktop, then move to where you want it to be? Get it saved, then reboot and see if the permissions return.

Thanks, Jake. I moved it to my desktop, and it saved fine, but when I moved it back to the HD, it would not save, so I'll have to investigate why. I appreciate your help.

Now that you have it saved, try a reboot and see if you can then move it to where you want it to go.

Jake, I did a reboot, and it still won't save unless I move it to the desktop.

Check the Get Info on the folder into which you are trying to save the document. Even if you can read/write the document, if the folder is closed to you, you can't put it there.

If it's due to folder permissions wouldn't that cause the same problem for all files in that folder? Easy enough to check that I think.

Maybe it would be worth Duplicating the document on the desktop and see if the duplicate can be edited and saved to the folder in question?

Rod, you are correct that if it is a folder issue that all the files in that folder would be affected. What I was trying to get at was that dhughs9 said:
Thanks, Jake. I moved it to my desktop, and it saved fine, but when I moved it back to the HD, it would not save
and I wonder what HD is being referred to here. If it's an external HD, it could very well be permissions on the drive, folder or file. Given that it saved to the Desktop, which is a folder on the internal drive under his user name, that eliminated the internal drive, leaving either a folder issue under the login name or, if it's an external drive dhugh9 is using, then it could be still the drive or folder. So we need more information to see what to try next.

And if the external drive is formatted to NTFS, that could be the source of the problem. ;)

Charlie, I hadn't thought of that, but you are absolutely correct! So, we need more information on the location where this file won't save.

Sorry so long getting back on here. I have 3 HDs, this particular file is on the HD that I run OS 10.11.6. This file is not in a folder, when I double click on that HD icon, it's in the list that window brings up. Jake had me try to move it, so I moved it to the desktop, and it saved, but when I moved it back, it still would not save. I opened a new Numbers document in the same place, which saved fine. I just read Rod's suggestion to duplicate, which I did and it would save. I then tried the original file, and IT SAVED THAT TIME. So, the problem is solved, but I still don't know what happened. This particular Numbers document is 3 years old, and never had trouble saving updates before.
Thanks, all you brains. Maybe it won't happen again, but if it does I'll know how to work around it.

Glad you got it sorted out. I frankly have no idea what went wrong, frankly. Just trying again seems to have fixed it. That shouldn't happen. But hey, take the success and run!

Sorry maybe I misunderstood but are you running a different operating system on your external HD to the Macintosh HD? If so you maybe have different versions of Numbers as well. That might be a cause of your problem?

Glad to read the problem is fixed and now I'm wondering if "Problem Solved" or something similar could be appended to the subject to help future users that might be searching on a similar problem??

Just curious and a suggestion. :Smirk:
