Hi to everyone, with a massive rush of blood which flooded my 'common sense box' I downloaded Skype onto my new 21inch iMac. The main reason is twofold, first I have an old service pal in New Zealand who uses Skype (nice to chat), second I simply cannot get EchoHam to work. I have downloaded the software for EchoHam and I can get it loaded, I can open it but I cannot talk on it. I have looked at the other VOiP software called HamSphere and it looks good (with lots of favourable reviews) but I am not sure about it. Why? Well, my mind says- if EchoHam will not transmit/receive then what chance for HamSphere, will that also refuse to work? I am loath to throwing 30 Euros/£26 into someone some-ones bank account only to find I have purchased yet another "pig in a poke" and wasted my money. After a deep memory search I now remember I did once use HamSphere (about 15 years ago on the dreaded Windows OS) and paid for a 12 month contract, HamSphere remembers these things to save a second FREE TRIAL.

On trying to delete Skype I am informed that "Skype cannot be uninstalled", now come on get real any downloaded secondary software can be uninstalled if not needed? Perhaps I am being stupid as usual and not grasping the reasoning behind it.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Keith, are you giving up on talking with your pal in NZ? If EchoHam doesn't work for you, and if you delete Skype, then you'll be back to the landline.

That said, how are you trying to delete Skype? And have you completely shut Skype down before trying to delete it? If it's running, it can't be uninstalled.

Good morning Jake, I really am being a pain in the rear-end. Downloading Skype was, I suppose, an attempt to stop having to conduct our chats by email after Len (in NZ) mentioned that we used to use Skype in my Windows days. He is not an amateur so EchoHam is not an option. I think back to email is the only viable option.

As far as I am aware I have closed Skype down completely but I have no idea as to how to check for "running" software on my iMac. Yes I am aware that if it is running it cannot be uninstalled and that applies to any software. If you do attempt to uninstall a running piece of software you are informed that it is still running and that fact is not mentioned in the report that "Skype cannot be deleted". Oh I do wish I could learn all about computers and how to run them properly instead of stumbling along on a daily basis.

On the EchoHam front, some-one mentioned the following numbers (IP addresses I think) 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and I did not make a note of where I had to put them! Yet an other brain storm or Senior Moment. As I am shortly due my 84th birthday I am beginning to think that I am a "Senior Moment"!

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Hi, I have just done some checks, in my applications folder Skype is NOT mentioned at all. In my launchpad I have Skype duplicated, so two entries. Neither of then do anything at all when I left or right click.
Something is wrong but I have not got a clue as to what it might be. I cannot drag either of the icons to the Trash can and get them to stay there enabling me to uninstall.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

As an alternative to Skype and email, you could try (all free) WhatsApp or, if Len uses Mac, Facetime or Messenger. I find talk on WhatsApp works better via phone rather than MBP. Doesn't have to be iPhone at the other end. I chat with family in Ireland this way, no cost.

Keith, to see if Skype is running, go to Applications/Utilities and run Activity Monitor. Click on the CPU tab, then on the title bar "Process Name" to get the display in alphabetical order, then scroll down to see if Skype is listed. If it is, it's running. You can stop it from there by clicking on it, then on the "X" icon at the top of the column and Quit, or Force Quit if Quit doesn't work. Once stopped you should be able to remove it as usual.

I cannot say why it's in launchpad and not Applications. I don't use launchpad at all.

Hi, Thanks Sue but my friend is not an Apple man at all so that avenue is out, battling with Windows 10 ( he has my sympathies)! We do not chat that often at all only very occasionally.

Jake, have searched in applications and utilities but there is no mention of Skype at all, I entered Skype in the search box (top right of box) and got nothing as it blued out. I then looked again in my launchpad, both Skype icons are in a grey box (3 x 3 cms) and titles underneath as Social Networking. I then returned to my utilities section, in there the closest entry was SocialPushAgent. I did not explore as I know not what I am doing. As a result I still cannot uninstall/delete Skype and am at a dead-end as to what else to try. by the way I hope you and your family are all well?

Hello Kieth. Have you tried Appcleaner? It's free and can be downloaded from the App Store, (I think). With that you just drag the application from the applications folder into it and it clears all the associated files off the machine and deletes them. Well worth a try if you haven't got it. It works for me.

Cheers

Hi Gandalf, Thanks for your comment but Skype is not in the applications folder but in the launchpad; it appears in a 3 x 3 cm square box and there is no way I can get it out of there. I will look at Appcleaner though and see if I can use it.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby.

Hello again Jake, the link did not help at all as due to where/how Skype is located (in the launchpad) not Applications! As I said in a 3 x 3 cm box in applications. I have decided that as it does not appear to cause any hassle I will just allow it to have "board and lodgings" FOC. Thank you for your interest and help. Until next time then.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Keith, please look in Applications for Skype. Launchpad is not a folder. The Skype app must be located in a folder if it is installed. If not found there, do a search for it.

Keith, you can also use Spotlight to search for Skype. As toMACsh says, it MUST be there for it to show in Launchpad. And when you delete it from wherever it is, it will disappear from Launchpad (or should, anyway).

Guys, for what it's worth here is what I think is happening:

if Keith is reading his Activity monitor results correctly Skype itself is no longer on the computer. I think the icons in Launchpad are aliases left over from when the program was still installed. I've looked at a few different ways to correct this problem and most don't work unless the application you are getting rid of was purchased from the Mac App
Store. This app might work but I haven't personally tested it. the free version might be worth a try.

I think you've got it Sly, and personally I think Launchpad is one of the stupidest things Apple insists on including.

If it helps, he may find a helpful answer here:
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202635 > Delete an app
and/or
https://www.imore.com/how-use-launchpad-mac

Or just ignore using the Launchpad and use the Dock or something that works better.

PS: Skype should work just fine to talk to his old buddy.
And it's pretty easy to setup:

Good morning every-one, especially Slydude and more so Patrick. pm-r Patrick, I followed your first link and then printed instructions within. Low and behold I got all icons wobbling (as on iPhones), I then clicked on the skype icon, (x) appeared and another click did the trick Skype disappeared. I thank each and every-one of you for your help, I do not know what I would do without you all. Thanks every-one.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Launchpad apps (icons) are removed the same way you remove apps on an iPhone. Hold down your mouse button on the app icon you want removed and when it starts to wiggle, press delete. It's gone. Keep in mind that icons in Launchpad are all aliases and so the original app in Applications must also be removed.

Ah.. OK. I didn't see Keith's post until I replied. Good show Keith! And another Texas hat to the Dude! :)

Good morning pm-r and slydude, between you you have sorted out my problem. Slydude made the first move which prompted pm-r to make another move, he made a comment regarding two different links; I followed the first link and there was the answer to my problem. Thank you both very much indeed for yet another problem solved by the members of this superb forum. Hope all is well in your families.

Thanks Keith for you kind comments, but my concern now is the fact that you don't have Skype installed so you won't be able to chat with your old buddy.

It's very simple to setup and then all you need is for your chum to do the same and then arrange an agreeable time to chat.

PS: I like your sig. And so true. ;)
