I don't want to be a pain, but I still have an outstanding question, regarding my printer. Can you please help me with my dilemma?

BTW: That Roch, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales area seems to be quite a nice but quite remote area according to Google Maps. You're lucky that any broadband connections even exist out there on the edge.

Frank, can you tell us what you have already tried with the printer? That would save us telling you stuff you already have tried. From your description in post 47, it might be that a simple reboot of the Mac might fix it. Or open the printer in System Preferences/Printers & Scanners, open the Print Queue and see if the jobs can be released. Sometimes when a printer "goes away" (as in the plug comes out), the printing system stalls and needs rebooting.

Hello Patrick, we are in the far west of Wales, but why should that matter? The BT engineer has just been and changed the Master Socket. I now have a speed of 75 MG or whatever it's called. Now my broadband is as fast as the MAC!


Hello Jake, I've looked at printer preferences, but can't do anything with it. I use right click, or the left click - I simply cannot identify anything I can do that would fix things. As far as I know all the connections are ok. My colour cartridge ran out, so I changed it, and expected the printer to work, but no joy. How do I reboot the Mac?

Hi Frank

Well the easy part is rebooting the Mac which means restarting it.

Click on the Apple icon, far left, top menu bar. From thr drop down, choose Restart.

It may take a minute or two as it has to close all open Windows and apps before it restarts.

As easy as that. Whether that cures your printer problems is another matter

No doubt you will let us know.

And jolly good news about your broadband. You might be surprised to hear that in many parts of the UK, best speeds are as low as 5 to 10 Mbps and a very few areas,broadband is not available at all!

It may not matter at all Frank, but a lot of the rather remote places often get overlooked for providing decent speed broadband use. You don't seem to be one of them now that the tech fixed things.

You may also want to try to "Reset Printer":

Also reset the printer by turning it off, unplugging it normally, and then connect the power and turn it on.

I just tried Restart, as Ian suggested. Just opened one of my diabetic emails, to print something, but no joy. I've just seen your message above, so I'll investigate that soon. I'm getting frustrated.

Frank, try this. From the printer control panel (The one on the printer itself) print out the network information. What you want from that printout is the IP number of the printer. It will be in the format of 255.255.255.255 where the "255s" will be other numbers. Now open the Printer preferences from System Preferences and click on the "+" at the bottom of the list of printers. Now click on the IP tab and enter the number from your printer. Put whatever you want in Name and then click "Add" to add the printer. Now, in the printer list click any printer that is NOT the new one and click the "-" to remove them. You should end up with ONE printer, the one you just added. That should reestablish the printer and make it the default for you.

I had to do this recently for my wife's computer for some unknown reason. What may have happened to you is that when the plug fell out of the socket and you put it back, the printer got a new IP number from the router and you have not updated your print system to that new number. There are ways to keep that problem from happening, but for now just reconnect and we can work on the prevention later.

Hello Jake,
I have just carried out, the suggestion that Patrick wrote at the bottom of his post above. It seems to have done the trick! My printer is now printing all the print files from its spool file, as I know it. So I'm as happy as Larry!

It has printed 6 items, with 2 to follow. I can now confirm, that is printing the diabetic article from one of my emails this evening.

forgive me, I've just properly read your post above. Thank you for that, but I don't understand all of the message. The printer I was having the problem with, now seems to be working. I also have another printer, which I shall eventually use for printing photos; something I haven't got around to trying out yet. You mention the router! Since I have been in my new home, my BT Hub, has been giving me a lot of grief. I believe the problem has been solved, I'm still in discussions with BT, regarding my account. Now, I have come across a Wi-Fi button on my router, which needs to be turned on, in order for my photo printer to be wirelessly connected. This is all over my head! Too complex. When I do begin to start playing with it, and get no joy - I shall be back!

Hello friends,

I apologise for not being around. My wife and I are busy looking after our grandchildren, during school holidays. Worry not, because I'm unable to access my Mac on a regular basis, for past 2 months, I haven't learnt anything new on the Mac. I basically just check my emails and look at Facebook. Boring I know, but it's the best I can do at present. I haven't done any photos, nor have I loaded any more CD's. Anyway, there's no rush for me to do so.

Just last week, I attempted to scan an invoice for my new shed, in order to register for warranty. I completely failed! I can't remember how I achieved it last time!

This morning, I had an email from a guitar magazine website, I occasionally hear from. I can't read the content, or watch any videos, as the email says Flash is required to be downloaded. Is it ok to load Flash onto my Mac computer? I no longer upgrade any flash software on my windows PC. My son says, I simply don't need it. Can you advise me please?

Hello, Frank. You CAN load Flash on your Mac, although it is a bit of a hog for the CPU when it is running. Be sure to go to adobe.com to get it as there are some dodgy versions out there that have been hacked by the "bad guys" and can do some nastiness. Your son is also correct in that you don't "need" it unless you get something like the guitar magazine that has not updated to newer standards for video files and still uses the much older, and sadly decrepit Flash. I have it on my system, use it about two-three times a year for a really stubborn site that refuses to change. Eventually when Flash is retired, banished, condemned and fully gone, that site may have to adjust.

Were you trying to scan through your printer? IF so, what printer and how is it attached to the Mac?

Yes, I'm trying to scan through my printer, which is a HP Deskjet 2050. It is connect to my Mac, via a usb cable.

As your need of Flash is likely to be occasional, instead of downloading Flash to your Mac (constant reminders to update and possible vulnerabilities); why not download the Chrome Browser which has Flash embedded in it and is always kept up to date.

Then use/keep Safari as your default browser and, on those rare occasions when Flash is the only option, click on Chrome and view it. Then Quit Chrome and use Safari.

Frank, if you are still there, open System Preferences, then Printer & Scanners and select Scan. Just follow the directions to scan a document on the scanner.

If you do use Chrome, be advised that like all Google products, it probably reports back to Google whatever you use it for, and then Google sells that to companies to "target" you for adverts. Lots of folks are OK with that. I am not. I don't use ANY Google product. They know a lot about me, but I'm not making it easy for them.

thank you for your replies. Er, I won't bother to get Flash, I had this one off email, that I ain't seen before. And I don't want to use Chrome on my Mac.

As for the printer scanning thing, I'll try some other time. The problem with me is, if I don't use something on a regular basis - I simply forget how to do it.
