Hi guys and girls. Well I am in a panic mode right now! I have a Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina in mint condition but in black screen when it boots up. These are the specs of my mac book

2013 Macbook Pro Retina
Processor 2 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphic Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

My issues started about 2 weeks ago. I went to work as usual, used my computer like any other day. I carry my computer in a backpack inside a sleeve to protect it from scratches. After my work day, I turn it off like usual, I came home rested and left my computer in the backpack and didn't use it for two days. After the two days, I was going to edit some videos for my work place but the screen would not come on. It has happen one time in the past. I google a solution but can not remember the solution. At first the computer would not make a sound, I knew it was on because of my caps. I tried a SMC it didn't work, I tried pram and it started to chime again but the screen stays black. I can plug it into an HDMI and use my TV or another monitor. I also try to unplug the battery and use the charger and it did not work either. Do you guys have any advice before I hand it over to the apple technicians and make some damage to my wallet.

It sounds like your display or its backlight may have failed. The fact that you can get video on an external monitor pretty well says it all. Use a flashlight in a darkened room while your MBP is on and not hooked up to an external display, to see if you can make out any video at all on the screen. In any event, it looks like you need to take it to Apple.

And welcome to our forums.

Sorry to hear that. Are you going to let them repair it as it sounds like it may be expensive?

Hmmm…??? Doesn't that Mac qualify for the MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues.???

The program covers affected MacBook Pro models until December 31, 2016 or four years from its original date of sale, whichever provides longer coverage for you.

https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

Something goofy if it does or maybe I missed something…

Yes I was going to send it in but pm-r just gave a quick link to something that I didn't know. It's the same exact symptoms my pro has.

I'm quite concerned and so should you be from your earlier post:

Did they not mention anything about the MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues??? Not good if they didn't and your Mac qualifies.
What part of the world do you live just out of curiosity??

Anyway, good luck.

It doesn't affect 13" Macbook Pros, just saying.

Okay I ran the serial number and it shows valid purchase date. If I am guessing right, the Mac qualifies for this. I'm hoping. I live in the USA more specific in Georgia. They didn't not mention about this at all. They just told me. I could send it to there shop for 310 dollars and they would repair any damage to computer.

As member ferrarr stated, your machine is not covered by the recall which is why the Apple Genius did not mention it. The $310.00 flat rate depot repair is a fair price for a new display and logic board. The only drawback is that Apple will send your machine out for depot repair which will likely take around a week to 10 days to complete.

Unfortunately my luck was not with me, 310 for repair is better than replacing a machine. I rather spend 310 than one thousand any day. I have another computer running so it won't be a big issue for the time to get it fix.

That seems very reasonable and fair, especially when I recall the itemized bill on my 2007 15" MBPro that was covered by a similar extended warranty was around $1,000.00± cdn.

But it does make one wonder about the cost of parts and labour compared to its retail price. ;)

This is true with any kind of electronic repairs. Even worse are auto repairs. The other day I had my Mustang repaired (new battery cables and electronic check). The shop called and said that my Mustang needed other repairs so that it could pass state inspection. He then quoted a bunch of goobly gook over the phone and said it would cost $4200.00. I laughed and told them to just do what I asked and no more! By the way this is for a "98" Mustang. The $4200 exceeds the Blue Book price.

Usually, I like to take things apart. For some reason, I can't make myself to take apart my computer. I looked up online to find parts and wow they are expensive just for a used logic board it's over 400 dollars and the screen it's another 400 dollars because of the Retina. What I'm starting to question. How exactly do they fix my computer with 300 dollars.

$400 for a logic board is no surprise…especially for a newer computer. For a 15" 2013 MacBook Pro…I'm a little surprised it's not more expensive.

I would also guess that maybe a 15" display is more expensive than a 13" display.

Depending where you're purchasing parts from…there's a middle-man. Middle-man adds their profit to the cost…jacking up the price (higher than maybe it costs Apple). If purchasing parts someplace like eBay. High-bidder gets it (price can go anywhere). Even above retail.

$300 is probably worth it on a 15" 2013 retina MacBook Pro.:)
