If you can take one more dumb question? Where do I find apple menu ?

The Apple Menu is the Apple Icon in the upper left of the display.

This must only be a ripping program?

Yes. Handbrake is a ripping program.

You said that you wanted to be able to rip, convert, and burn videos to disk. Ripping is the first step.:)

I don't think that you will find an app that will do it all (rip, convert, burn)…but I could be wrong (I don't do this that often).;)

If you do not mind paying $$$ the best Burning App for the Mac Platform is Roxio Toast hands down. There are others and some freeware like Burn but I have found Toast the best. It will also do the converting to the DVD format for you before burning and allow menus if you want them.

Yes, Roxio Toast is the Nero equivalent on OSX.

You need to go to:

- Apple Menu
- System Preferences
- Security & Privacy
- General Tab
- click on the lock (lower left of window) to unlock it
- Under the heading "Allow applications downloaded from:"...change to "Anywhere".
- Now everything should work.

Don't forget to change your Security & Privacy settings back to where they were if you prefer them that way.:)

- Nick
Another way to accomplish this is to right click on the downloaded installer or application, select "Open," then acknowledge that you do, in fact, want to run the program and it will work. You only need to do the acknowledgement once as OSX will then remember that you have authorized the application. Using this method you don't have to remember to put your security settings back, they never got changed in the first place.

The first thing you will learn to use is that Apple in the upper left corner. Click that, then "About this Mac". You'll see the version number which is the precise answer to your question. I'm not sure where you'll find the name of your OS (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite,etc.). While you're there, click on the version number a couple of times to get additional info, especially the serial number which you'll have to know on occasion.

Click again on the apple, then System Preferences, which puts Windows "Control Panel" to shame. Look around.

You're going to love this machine.

I'm not sure where you'll find the name of your OS (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite,etc.).

When you do the "About This Mac"…then "More Info". If the "Overview" tab is clicked (depending on the OS version installed)…that window will include the OS name (Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, etc.).

See how the photo below shows "Lion" (there are other ways to figure this out as well). Such as Wikipedia & other Mac/Apple info sites:

It would have been nice, but in my iMac's 10.9.3 version, it's not there. :-(

Sure it is. Click on "more info" as instructed above, you'll see a box identical to what Nick posted. Here's mine:

AboutThisMac-Mavericks.png

As you can see, 10.9.3 Mavericks.

For what it's worth:

10.0 = Cheetah
10.1 = Puma
10.2 = Jaguar
10.3 = Panther
10.4 = Tiger
10.5 = Leopard
10.6 = Snow Leopard
10.7 = Lion
10.8 = Mountain Lion
10.9 = Mavericks
10.10 = Yosemite (pending release)

Thanks for the list Pigoo3 (love your Black Lab by the way, just like one I owned for 13 years).My Mac Book Air is on OSX 10.8.5, and I can't see the name Mountain Lion anywhere either, there seems to be some differences on this subject, I'm glad you've cleared it up. But,I still don't see 'The Lion;' in your photo, nor under the System Report.

Thanks. He's actually a Newfoundland. But it's not exactly the best photo (it was snowing at the time of the photo).:)

Chas,

This is no longer a search for information, because Nick resolved the whole thing very neatly (above). What it is, though, is an attempt to determine whether both of us are crazy or not. The OS name does not show on mine OR yours!

I'd like to show mine, but I can't figure out how. It's a .jpg file on my desktop, but the "Insert Image" option calls for a URL. Any help for an old man who is obviously starting to lose it?

Bud: you're correct, it doesn't show the name. These days (wasn't always the case), the name of the OS is shown when you're "buying" it from the Mac App Store (see below), and apparently did (at least for Lion) show up in system info but doesn't anymore. Might do again. Apple's funny like that ...

MacAppStore-Mavericks.png

To insert a picture from your own files, you need to use the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the message-composition window, and you'll see there are expanded controls including a way to attach your own photos (look for the "paperclip" attach icon). The "short form" only has an image link for photos on the web.

The Apple menu is at the very top left of the menu bar. It's shaped like a little black Apple logo. Click it to see the menu options. System Preferences is there, along with information about your Mac, the App Store, Software Update and others.

Pigoo's instructions are not specific to any one program. The setting he describes is simply a security setting for what apps you can install. You can allow any apps to be installed or you can allow only apps from the App Store to be installed.

It sounds like you need some basic Mac geography lessons. Here is a link to some basic Mac tutorials. I highly recommend the short video tutorials at the top of the list if you're someone who learns by watching like I am.

Thanks Oneironaut, but I can't even get it to show up on the page, the current thread takes up to 3 pages, and when I add 4 to go to the next page, nothing happens, I am returned to page 3 each time. Any suggestions as to why this should happen,and how it can be resolved??
