HI,
My daughter's late 2009 macbook pro 13" won't boot.
It goes to a white screen with a loud clicking noise every 1 second or so.

It was not dropped etc., it just started to do this and won't reboot.

a: What can I do?

b: How can I duplicate the disk (preferably to a larger one)
[it is 160 GB, I would like to clone to 500+ GB).

Thanks,
- James

This is almost certainly a dead hard drive. I hope everything was backed up.

About the only option is to buy a new drive.

Hate to break the bad news, but you're not getting data off a drive with a mechanical failure without sending it off to the pros - at a cost of probably $1,000 or more.

I hope your daughter had the hard drive backed up because she's going to need a new one.
