Hi, I do a lot of photography and need a new computer. A pro photo man told me to get an Apple because of the processing speed. The only thing holding me back from apple is that I also use Ftl Sim X from a PC. Tis a monster game and I have been told that bootlegging 50% 50% that it will work. How well is my question? Any thoughts?..........Randy

It is Bootcamp (repartitioning and dual booting to a second OS other than OSX), and yes, you can do that. It works really well.

"Go Mac because it's faster" is not really the best reason, since your game, even in Bootcamp, will probably not run as fast as a Windows machine at the same price. What your friend said offers no real insight as to why. Macs use the same Intel processors as Window machines.

As someone who came from the Windows world into the OSX world, I can say that, side by side, OSX and Mac does not game as well as Windows. Processing a single photo is not going to show much difference in speed. Lets be realistic.

Now, the difference is in the raw power of the full 64-bot OS with 64-bit apps. I notice the difference when I am processing video. FCP vs Sony Vegas Pro (11) there is no contest. When I was Bootcamped and running Vegas, a 5 minute short done in 4k took 30 minutes to process and render a simple filter (8mm + Color Correction) and compression to 1080i. In Final Cut Pro X, the same process took slightly more 5 minutes.

Again, will you notice a single photo difference in speed - I haven't. I still bought the Mac, however, and I use it for everything. I have, in the last 2 weeks, been able to get rid of my Bootcamp partition and go back to OSX completely. No more dual booting.

You know much more about these things than I do. Flt sim x is equal to 7-8 normal games and even now on this pc which isnt to shaby I cant run the game at full settings. I wouldnt be able to stand anything less. Now with this thing called bootleg is there enough room depending on where I put the partition to use the game at good settings? I know there is not a platform available pc or apple to peg the game but I dont want to go less as I said. You know for the money you can get one heck of a PC but color saturation resolution I dont think can top Apple as I have been to the store. There is a blog on line that talks about this very problem but I am trying to get the best info from the horses mouth so to spaek........Randy

For gaming it is all about the video card. a 13" MacBook Pro wont cut it. even the lower end 15" MBP wont. those use the shared memory Intel cards, not the full video cards such as the AMD Radeon. Sorry, no. the low end Macs wont cut it for gaming. Bootcamp (not bootleg) wont help this...

Color correction - done with software. If you are going to be that critical, you need an external monitor anyway, one that you can custom set. As for the "color saturation" that is software controlled anyway - again, get a second monitor.

Go to an Apple store, or Best Buy with a decent Apple rep and get hands on. Spending $3600 on the full top of the line 17" MBP and spending the same amount on a Windows machine you will get a much better gaming machine than the Mac will be. Sorry to say, but it is true.

Nothing can beat hands on...

I was thinking of the IMAC with the 27" screen thats for $1600 ,a nice unit. This one is not as strong as the tower but might be enough. I was in Hartford Ct the other day and it was so noisy and packed that the girl helping me was in a hurry to move on. I did not know Best Buy sold them. Well, on to best Buy. thanks Randy
