An "update" encompasses a single or one update to the operating system. For example: An update from Snow Leopard 10.6.0 to 10.6.1 and so on.

The "combo update" combines all previous updates into one single update. For example: The combo update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 would include the previous update from 10.6.0 to 10.6.1 plus 10.6.2.

Regards.

The combo updates apply all previous updates.

It also allows for you to verify the checksum to make sure you have a good download.

It is believed by many to be safer than using the auto update feature for system updates.
