If you want some pure blogging no setup, then check out blogger (www.blogger.com). Just have to enter your post title, content, and hit publish. Easiest thing in the world. You can also email your posts, where the subject becomes the post title.

Try it out. WP on the other hand is much more powerful but needs you to set it up (unless you use www.wordpress.com to host your blog)

blogging looks like a bit of fun, i might try it out.....how much does it cost for the webspace on average? also, are there any rules about what you can/cannot put on blogs (not talking about anything seedy) for example, google adverts etc that you can get money from?

It is fun but you have to have something you want to write about regularly. That's been the toughest part of having my blog; right now it's all about a Windows guy getting a Mac and all of the pitfalls I've encountered. Now that I'm very comfortable with my Mac I have less to write about on that topic.

I would highly recommend Blogger.com. Super easy and free. And since it's owned by Google they make it really easy to put ads in it. Keep in mind that you need some serious traffic to generate any real money on advertising so it can be a lot of work. I personally did mine more just to have a place to record my thoughts.

are there any terms that require you to update regularly? or can you just go at your own pace?

You go at your own pace. For every blog that is actively being maintained there are tens of thousands that still only have a single initial post.
