Is thre an equivalent to "Control, Alt,Delete" for the MAC?. My new iMac locked up and I had to switch off the power and restart.

I think you're talking about Force Quit.

It's Cmd + Option + Esc

Command + Option + Esc brings up the "Force Quit" window if that is what you are looking for.

A hard restart won't hurt things, though. Especially if the entire machine locks up.
