hi,

I've recently found out, that audio stream cannot be sent over mini display port in my Macbook pro (macbook middle 2009y).
I'm trying to understand which adapter should work for it - I found two different kinds, one with additional jack plug, and one only with usb and mini display port.
My question is - do they both send audio to the external projector/monitor ? Does the first option send the audio signal over usb port..(really?) ?

thanks

Looks like a HDMI female connector on both of these adapters. Yes you can send audio over USB or the 3.5mm jack if you have it. So either of those adapters should get you both audio and video on the HDMI side in the end..

Ok thanks. I was just wondering why would I need three cables if I can have the same thing using only two .
Looks like it's clear now, if both should work, I'll get the one that has less cables.. thanks!

The USB connection is not needed. Is the USB supposed to be for sound?

hi,

I've recently found out, that audio stream cannot be sent over mini display port in my Macbook pro (macbook middle 2009y).

This is a very confusing area because when Mini DisplayPort was introduced, it did not transfer sound. However, it does now. All iMac models since Late 2009 transfer sound, and every other Macintosh since 2010 does too.

All Macs with HDMI ports provide audio through the HDMI port, no matter what year.

If those are the 2 cables sold by monoprice - the cheaper cable will only pass stereo while the other will pass 5.1 audio. So, depends on what you plan on passing (all your music is only stereo while your iTunes movies/TV shows will mostly carry 5.1 audio) and what audio device you'll be sending the signal to.
