According to the latest "Windows Secrets Newsletter" #466, Jan 29, 2015:

Most surprising, however, was the statement that all Windows 7 users will get a free upgrade for a year after Win10's release — and once they've upgraded, all future changes to Windows 10 will be free. There is, of course, some ambiguity I'll discuss at the end of this article. (Has Microsoft taken another lesson from Apple, or it is a sort of unspoken apology to those who bought Windows 8?)

Looks like Microsoft if finally coming around and taking lessons from success: Apple. ;)

I think Microsoft can do a couple of things to make adoption of newer version of Windows better. 1) Stop dramatically changing the user experience with each release to a point that one is discernible than the other. 2) Have a single version of Windows for desktop users and one for server users. 3) Make it as affordable as possible to take away the pain of updating, free is great, but something like < $25 would be fine too..

I think Windows 7 was a nice stable OS and 8 was fine as long as you used it like Windows 7. Windows 10 essentially makes that happen without you having to do anything which is good to see..

I've got the Technical Preview and have been playing with it for work and its doing a bunch of things right..

At the end of the day its still Windows though..:)

Can anyone explain to me why it’s going from 8.1 to 10? Did they miscount while naming Windows 7 or what?

I'm not very surprised, considering how bad Windows 8 was (I know some liked it, but I wasn't impressed at all.) Hopefully Microsoft took a step back and decided to take a look at the things they did right, the things they did wrong, and Windows 10 will be a major improvement.

I too am a little curious about what happened to Windows 9? Is it possible that as an upgrade to 8 it had so many problems that they just gave up and decided to redesign the whole OS from scratch?
I'm told Windows 10 is quite a departure from 8.

I am pretty interested in Windows 10. I will probably upgrade my Boot Camp partition but I do want to do a bit of wait and see to find out if there are any major compatibility issues. Installing W10 on my rMBP seems like a no brainer. I probably won't bother to install Windows on it until 10 comes out though. Better just stick to Mac games when I'm not at home, heh

Not a beta, but a Technical Preview has been available for a while now. After the recent Windows 10 unveiling they are promising another update with more of the functionality that will make it into the final product..

I have the Tech Preview installed in a VM and it works fine..

Yes it will but be careful installing it. I have seen a lot of posts where people have erased OS X trying to install Windows in bootcamp. I used virtual box and it runs very well in it. Others have used VMware and are reporting great results.

Since this is a just a public beta and not the released version, you should do it on a machine without important data or as the others (and I) have done, use a virtualization software like VirtualBox, VMWare Fusion or Parallels..

Without a doubt I'm putting it on my desktop PC which is currently running 8.1.

I would have liked it if my Surface RT would get it, but it looks like at best it's just going to get some type of update with maybe a few Windows 10-like features, and that's it. But whatever, I can deal with that.

I have one less Windows machine to worry about -- I sold my laptop to my sister-in-law because they needed one.

So now I have four computers -- this Mac mini, my Windows tower, my Surface RT, and a Google Nexus 7.

Life is good ... everything is running really well.

But yeah, I know this is a Mac forum, so I try not to talk about Windows much, but since this thread is about Windows 10, I'll just sum up by saying I'm excited about it and looking forward to its release later this year.

Microsoft decided not to call the next version of Windows = "9" because of the confusion it might cause with Windows 95. Not confusing to me, but who knows what they're thinking in Redmond?
