Snow Leopard ?

I signed up to itunes today.
Purchased 16 singles.

Placed them in a separate folder & burned to a TDK CDR-80 700MB.
They play back fine on the mac, but won't play on any of the following.

Panasonic DMR-ES20 DVD Recorder
Sony DVP-CX995V 400 Disc DVD Player
Panasonic DVD-S68 DVD/CD Player *Less Than 6 month old*
My car cd player

I tried a fresh cd & only burned 4 songs on it, but the results were the same.

Hopefully there's a simple explanation

Thanks in advance

Steve

Did you burn them as MP3s or audio files? I suppose if they all fit on one 700 MB CD they were burned as MP3s. Does your Sony, Panasonics, and Car stereo play MP3s?

Unless those devices mentioned will play MP3s, your burned 700 MB CD will only play on your Mac.

Thanks for the reply.

"Did you burn them as MP3s or audio files?

When I click on 'Get Info' it says MPEG-4 audio. This is also shown in the songs title . 01 Steal My Sunshine (Single Version).m4a
All 16 songs are the same.

So I guess I burned them as MP4s ?

I'm almost certain they all have in the past.

The newest of these units is the Panasonic S68, which is less than 6 months old.
From the Panasonic web page.

Play Almost Anything

Incredibly versatile and multi-format-friendly, this DVD player can play back just about any DVD or CD you can throw at it.
Specifically, it can play back the following disc formats: DVD-Video, DVD-RW1, DVD-R (including dual layer)1, DVD+R (including dual layer)1, DVD+RW1, CD, CD-R/RW1, WMA, MP32, JPEG, MPEG43

The Sony is from 2009
Compatible with SACD, DVD-RW/-R/+RW/+R, MP3, JPEG, CD-RW/-R, VCD and SVCD formats

Hope this gives enough info for a solution.

Thanks again

You're burning those songs in a compressed format which it appears your devices will not play. Do this: Burn one song as audio (it will take up much more space on a CD) and then see if it will play.

Many mp4 files have a different sample rate than CD players expect. Typically CSs are burned with the sample rate set to 44.1, 16 bit and 2 channels (stereo). You can convert the mp4s to this kind of file with a program like Audacity. iTunes will also do this but the procedure varies a bit depending on the version you have.

Here's what I'd suggest as a test. Download Burn and follow the procedure for creating an audio CD. Make sure to burn to CD and not DVD since some players cannot handle audio DVDs. See if that helps.

Good idea and Burn is free. However, won't iTunes also burn an MP4 as Audio? It seems to me that I've done that before with iTunes but it's been some time ago.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I won't have time to try them until tomorrow morning.

Will update then.

Sweet Success!

Turns out I already had 'Burn' installed.
Just burned a cd & it plays in all of my devices.

Thank you both.

Have a great weekend :)

Great news. That must mean there was something off about how the disc was burned. iTunes usually takes care of that. Maybe there's a setting that's off just a bit.

In iTunes, you can choose to burn either a "data" CD or an "audio" CD. The problem was that you were burning a "data" CD.

Because I'm running iTunes 12 as part of the Yosemite public beta, my window (seen below) will look a little different to yours, but it works the same way in iTunes 11:

1. Create a playlist of songs with a total time of under 78 minutes.

2. Right-click the playlist title and choose "burn playlist to disc"

3. You will then see the following submenu that offers the format you want to use (AudioCD for nearly universal compatibility):
