No longer a rumour, Office for the iPad has been officially announced. Also of note, the iOS and Android version for phones is now completely free.

It looks very "Office-y" which may not necessarily be a bad thing. Also of note, editing is reserved for those with a 365 membership.

This is great - no longer do I have to put up with Google Docs or Pages butchering my Office content for my iPad. Sweet sweet cross platform Office support...

Please note folks... that Office for the iPad is NOT free. You're required to buy a $99.00 per year Office 365 subscription in order to use it. Office for the iPhone is free as stated above by Van. (See quote below from article.)

With an Office 365 subscription, you can edit and create new documents with the iPad.

To further clarify, the apps are free if you only want to view documents (or present presentations). If you want to edit anything, you need to have the 365 subscription.

Yeah...saw both of those details. The apps are free for viewing...but need that 365 subscription to do any creating/editing.

Either way...for folks that need it...it's an option.:)

All this does is make me glad I've thus far gotten away with refusing to permit my work email, documents or anything else business related (aside from receiving phone calls) on my phone or tablet.

Same here. Everything that has to do with our business is done at my home office on the iMac. Besides, MS is late to the starting gate with this. There are many good and much less expensive apps that can view, edit, and create Office documents on the iPad and iPhone.

This is definitely where MS screwed up (at least at the moment). They waited too long to develop something...which gave other developers plenty of time to develop alternate products...and gave users lots of time to test, become familiar with, and prefer to MS products.:)

The one thing Office has is full compatibility (which is a huge plus since any other suite I've tried gets "fancy" sometimes and screws things up) and it has full integration with OneDrive which may not mean a lot to the army of Dropbox and Google Drive users but it does for people like me who now live off of OneDrive (given that it also has full Office support makes it the easy choice).

Really like all 4 apps. I'm subscribing to 365 tomorrow. Been waiting for this for a long time. Now my iPad really will be a production machine for me.

DataViz

Having come from a PC world, jumping to Apple a couple years ago, I found Documents To Go, from DataViz. With it I can do whatever I want with my MS applications, on my Mac or Apple platforms.

So when I first heard the news of "Office for Mac" on the news yesterday, i grinned as I felt I was already ahead of the game. Maybe not, but just saying...

Since you're new... Office for the Mac has been around for a long long time. Word and Excel were first programmed for the Mac even before they appeared for Windows or DOS many years ago.

What this is about, is an MS Office suite for the iPad which of course uses a different operating system (iOS). For this venture, Microsoft is a late comer.
