Can I use time machine to find, retrieve, and rename an old numbers file. I want to put the old version and the current version next to each other on the screen for comparison. It seems once I find an old file using time machine, I can't do anything with it. I can't even open it in numbers.

You need to restore it first. But before you do that rename your current version, then do the restore.

You could use Superduper for a bootable back up and then use FIWI for a comparsion on screen.
