My wife has recently got her her first smartphone. It is an iPhone SE using latest IOS. She would like a printed User Guide but there are so many on offer and the reviews are not that good. Can someone recommend a very good useful printed user guide for the iPhone SE and/or for the latest IOS? Thank you.

Hey guys....

If you had checked out the link I gave above you would have seen it's the same Apple manual and guide that you both suggested. :wink

In the above picture, the contact Liz Titus does not have any message content shown but the others do. Why is that? This is a question my wife asked yesterday and that's what prompted me to ask about a PRINTED book. My answer to her was, why does it matter that there is no message content shown, all you have to do is tap on the name and all message content will be seen, but she wants to know why. If someone could answer that question I'll be able to tell her the reason. Those are the sorts of questions I don't think will be answered in any book.

Thanks guys, but printing the online manual, no way, it's about 400 pages. She wants a printed book to buy as she doesn't want to read an online book on such a small screen.

The Liz Titus line DOES have content, an emoji. What that screen displays is the last, most recent, message received or sent to that individual. The last message was a smiley.

Thanks Jake, I hadn't spotted that. However, what prompted the question is that my wife's messages, looking at my wife's phone screen, in the same position as the example re Liz Titus taken from the apple support library, she has messages from one of her contacts that doesn't show any text from the last message received. Under the contact name it is just blank. Any ideas? Thanks.

Well, that is a list of recent Messages into and out of the phone. I have never done it, but I suppose one could send a set of just spaces, which would appear as nothing. Also, that display is of just the first few lines of the message, so if the message starts with a blank line, that's what would appear there. Also, I think if the message is a picture or image, it shows as a blank because it can't show the image in the space allowed. But frankly, in that case, I would expects to see what is under the "Liz Breyer" line.

But the bottom line is that the display is of the most recent communications, and if she wants to see what they are, she can tap on the ">" at the right to be taken to that message.

...
I've ordered a printed spiral bound book from the following.

You might want to compliment that book with one or some of the "iPhone for Dummies" books which are excellent and make good reading.

Or one of The Missing Manual series written by David Pogue in his very informative and humorous writing style.

Just having a single manual usually isn't enough that will cover everything, and be aware that some published manuals have Addendums that can be added that includes some updated stuff, that are either included in the price or at least can be purchased for a very reasonable price.

Thanks Patrick. I'll have a look at those ones once she has got to grips with the one I've ordered today. She is starting from absolutely no knowledge as she had a Nokia 6300 previously and she doesn't use my iMac or any other computer so it is a big step for her especially at her senior age!

Then maybe she just might enjoy this... :Smirk:

And good luck with the iPhone and a great idea using a manual as so many users so often just seem to ***** and complain when they have never even looked at or RTFM as the expression goes...
