After several years my AirPort Extreme died

Going to replace it with a NETGEAR R6400 - AC1750 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 5 Router. Couple of questions

1. Do I need to uninstall the AirPort Extreme software from my MAC? Suddenly NO power. Wonder if it could be the power adapter? How can I test that?

2. Any installation tips for the new router

3. Opinion of the NETGEAR R6400 - AC1750 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 5 Router

Am open to suggestions, but so sad my AirPort Extreme died. It's the first Apple product that has died on me. In fact my iMac I bought in Jan 2011is still going strong as are my iPad's purchased in 2012 and iPhone 6's we bought in 2015.

You do not need to uninstall the AE software. It's built into the system and can't be removed anyway. The only way to test the power adapter other than using a VOM and measuring the voltage, is to substitute another good one in its place.

Installing the new Netgear should be straight forward. Nowadays, most new routers are plug and play. You will of course have to make some selections such as password and whether or not you wish to turn on the guest network, and which frequency band to use (2.4GHZ or 5GHZ). Encryption should be automatic and probably default to WPA2 + AES.

Netgear provides their manual by PDF on line. You can read thru it to learn how to access the firmware menus and so forth.

Thanks for the quick response. I found several power adapters with the same spec's for less than $20 so I may go that route initially. I'll let you know how that works.

Pulled the trigger on a new NetGear Night Hawk AC1750. All is good.

I hear that Netgear Nighthawk is a great router. My older DLink was off and on messing up on the 5Ghz band so I got a AC1950 Linksys and it works much better than the older router.

A lot of times it can be the power adapter but in my case it was just the 5GHZ hardware locking.

I thought about buying a replacement power adapter but after I plugged in my cable modem directly to my MAC and ran a speed test, I discovered that routing it through the AE cut my speed in half, 100 mbps vs 200 mbps. Ran speed test after installing the NetGear AC1750 and my speed was 200+ mbps. So best $109 I've spent recently.
