most articles say to toggle this box you go to finder/pref/advanced. But I dont have the box when I get there. In Safari. Where is it?

Safari is a browser, it doesn't show files. Files appear in Finder. The path to it you posted is accurate. Safari is not Finder.

I'm sorry, but that makes no sense to me.

To show the extents in Finder, open Finder, then on the top bar, click on where it says "Finder" and a menu will open. One of the options is "Preferences." Pick that and on the Advanced tab the first article is an option to show filename extensions. Click that box and you have the extensions.

Get out of Safari and all other programs.

First item in Menu Bar should read 'Finder', click on it to open Preferences etc. Last selection is 'Advancwd'.
