Sorry for asking for help, I'm not here often and still don't have all the answers to my Mac....in fact I don't have many.
I purchased MS Office 365 subscription for my wife and I, I have a Mac and Ipad and she has a PC and Surface. Install on my Mac sent smooth enough but when I go to use Outlook, I have to update it to the newer version. The window pops up that asks for my keychain password for the update....I have tried every password I can remember but none seem to work and I can't even get the pop-up window that is asking for that information to go away without restarting my Mac.
I'm stuck and don't know what to do next.
Am using Mojave 10.14.
Thanks for the assist. This old guy needs help.

No need to apologise. One of the main reasons we are here to help with questions & solve issues!:)

...I have to update it to the newer version.

I'm guessing the password that is needed is either a password you setup for Outlook (login password for Outlook)...or...it's the Admin password for your computer.

Is it asking for the "keychain" password or just an Admin password? As Nick says, what is normally asked for in a software install/update is an Admin password. If you are an Admin, then your password for logging in will do.If you aren't an Admin, then the password you used to unlock the System Preferences is an Admin password and will do for the install.

The screenshot isn't visible. To upload, go advance, click on the square icon on the menu bar that looks like this: 2019-03-02 01.51.28 pm.png then, if it's not already there, click on the "From computer" tab then "Choose file" and point to the file you want to upload and finally click upload. It should end up with and ATTACH with a number that looks like this:

Then we'll be able to see ant you have going on.

...it says " Microsoft outlook wants to use your confidential information stored in "microsoft identity number...

If this is the case...and if you just purchased Office 365...then maybe it's a password related to Office 365.

Another thought. Did you have a previous version of MS Office installed on this computer (including Outlook)? If so...maybe it's looking for that password.

Enter the password for Keychain. It's usually the same as the password for your user account on the Mac.

That's the problem with passwords. If it's an older password...it's the one you can't remember that causes the most trouble.;)

In the screenshot above...it's say's enter the "login" keychain password. Like Slydude mentioned...this is generally the admin password for the computer. This is a very important password...since there are many things that this password is used for.

Assuming the password that's needed is your computer's Admin password...and assuming this password has been forgotten...there is a procedure to reset your Admin password (I will PM you the procedure).:)

One other quick thought. It's possible you may not have an admin passsword currently setup. In the screenshot above...what happens if you click "Allow"...without entering any password?

Just hit 'Deny' three times. A problem that has existed since Office 2016 for some. Mostly from outside US I read.

Have one more question....a friend send me a number of files in a zipped package.....when I unzip them, I don't know where they went and can't find them. Can I direct where the files are to be unzipped to?

Normally, the files end up in the same directory in which the .zip was when unzipped. Sometimes a new folder with the name of the zip is created there to hold the files, sometimes just the files appear there. Depends on how it was zipped.

I don't have a suggestion for the zipped files problem yet. I'd like to go back to your original question for a second.

Do you mean you were able to click Allow without entering the password? If so, I strongly suggest that you add a password to that account. That is a layer of security to prevent apps from doing certain things without your permission.

If you have another administrator account on the Mac you could also demote this account to a standard account.

If you need help with this please post back with a question.

Ok, Thanks. I'll keep looking.

I find the problem when unzipping a file is that it ends up in the same folder as Jake mentioned, but if the folder is sorted by date, the file ends up sorted by the file date which could be days or months earlier than the files that show in the folder currently.

To save me looking for the unzipped file, I just create a new folder on my desktop, drag the zipped file into that new folder, double-click to unzip and then the unzipped file will show up in that new folder as well.
