I have been running Time Machine to back up my 2011 IMac ever since I have had it. It has been backing up to a WD Elements 1TB external drive, All has been well until about two weeks ago when I got the message the the backup had failed and this has been the case ever since. Can anybody suggest why this should happen and a possible solution or do I simply go out and buy a new external drive and reinstall Time Machine. The drive is nowhere near full.

Thanks

Could be the WD Elements drive failed. Open Disk Utility and see if it shows up there. If it does click on it and hit repair and see what happens.

What have you tried?

Restart? Disconnect the drive, then restart, reconnect drive?

NVRAM reset?

SMC reset?

Safe mode?
