So you are in Airport Utility when doing this? You've done this in the past and not had any issues? The panic log isn't helpful enough, it's a generic "page fault" likely with a bad address. But it's kernel_task that's causing the issue it's in the depths of the OS and as such not easily fixed.

Can you try booting into Safe Mode and doing the same action and see what happens?

after going in to safe mode the whole iMac is lagging badly on everything even the log in screen

the airport utility still crashed the Mac.

In Safe Mode, the OS basically reduces the amount of things that run and is a great of isolating issues with apps. But it shouldn't necessarily lag or behave badly by itself.

You should do a NVRAM/PRAM reset and then run OnyX to just clean things up. Then do a disk repair with Disk Utility. That should hopefully put the fan back to it's normal state and perhaps it will help with the Airport Utility crash. If not, one possible scenario is that your RAM might be going bad. Assuming you have 4x8GB sticks, reduce it down to 1 8GB and see if the crash happens. If not, continue to add additional RAM sticks until it happens. And when it does, operate the iMac on ONLY the perceived bad stick and see if it behaves very poorly, if so, you've found the culprit.

Or maybe it is the kext hack you have used to get Mojave on a ten year old iMac.

With Mac Pros after a hack it was advised not to download and install updates which may hobble the computer.

Not quite Harry. The OP's info say High Sierra 10.13.6 and the macOS version reported in the panic log is 17G5019 which maps to the same version per this Wikipedia page. So that is definitely not the issue.

Read it Ashwin. I take this to mean it is running Mojave.

Interesting, the panic log definitely doesn't agree with that. Even if they managed to run Mojave on there, the panic log would reflect that version I imagine.

Harry, that is what his sig says, but the panic report has "17G5019" which is 10.13. All builds of HS start with "17." Now I don't know what the hack is to run Mojave on that machine, but unless it is also fooling the panic report, he's running 10.13.x. Mojave builds all start with "18."

BUT, if indeed Mojave is being run through a hack on an unsupported machine, then indeed that could be attributed to random issues.

I have a 2009 iMac that is stuck on High Sierra and is rock solid and I have no intention of running Mojave on there.

BUT, if indeed Mojave is being run through a hack on an unsupported machine, then indeed that could be attributed to random issues.

I have a 2009 iMac that is stuck on High Sierra and is rock solid and I have no intention of running Mojave on there.

And only God or some Gremlin might know what other bits and pieces are or might be still lingering about.

And a good memory credit to harry for remembering the hack was run:
but so far I'm still on OSX 10.14 but as its running slow on the internet I'm using my MacBook Pro more than ever.

I have the following in the iMac I7-870 2.93ghz 32GB DDR3 ram 500GB SSD

Maybe such users and posters should post some sort of warning flag that says they have been mucking around with some OS hacks.
It might save some members a fair bit of trouble shooting.

Excuse me, but why does everyone keep referring to EtreCheck as a free app when it only has a free trial, and then pops up a warning message after so many uses (maybe five at most) saying something like "You have been using EtreCheck for x time, you have x number of trials left or you can pay for it now" and a link to the payment site???

Seems like almost like a Bait and Switch type tactic or just a money grabber. Deceiving when their site says: FREE DOWNLOAD. Not completely!!

Patrick, it's available from the Mac App Store for no cost. There are in-app purchases, but you can download it and run it at no cost.

Well, it seems I'm not alone, at least when I ran the v. 4.1 EtreCheck Mar 1, 2018 that agrees with this:
EtreCheck will generate five reports for free, which should be enough to help diagnose an immediate problem with your hardware. After this it will cost around $10, depending on where in the world you are. This is so anyone can use it as a fast diagnosis tool, but also to cover the continued development costs.
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-mac-tools-fix-problems/

But then I deleted all associated .plist etc type files and that seems to have got rid of the number of times I had run it a message, and then I tried the v. 5.1 Dec 7, 2018 version and no patment suggestion.

So maybe it's due to some old preference file or an invisible one that Find Any File.app found lurking in some odd buried folder.

EDIT:
I just saw this at their site, but all non-Pro versions seem to work well when running Mavericks 10.9.5:

System requirements
EtreCheck:
A 64-bit "Intel" Macintosh computer running OS X 10.10 “Yosemite” or later.

EtreCheckPro:
A 64-bit "Intel" Macintosh computer running OS X 10.9 “Mavericks” or later.

As of Janurary 2nd, 2019, the Mac App Store and Pro versions are both up-to-date and equivalent.

PS: I think I might even give the Pro version a try, $10.00 won't break my bank.
