Hi guys,

i have an older MBP from 2010 that i've recently repaired by putting in a new battery and an SSD after both the originals failed.

It was ok for a while, no issues, but recently it will suddenly restart itself with no warning, bring up an error on restart of a Panic Report

I don't really know where to start with solving this, so any help is much appreciated, i've pasted the error report the panic generates below.

i'm hoping i can solve this as i really need to keep this machine going reliably for a bit longer

Thanks

Chris

The first line of the panic report tells it all:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f991a98d7): "GPU Panic:

This was a common malady with that model MacBook Pro. Apple repaired them for awhile for free under a general repair recall, but has long ago expired. It's possible to repair it but you will need to find someone who can do micro soldering and is familiar with that particular problem. It could be the GPU itself or a wayward capacitor.

It's also possible to run that machine using the Intel integrated GPU only while keeping the nvidia GPU off. You can probably find out how to do that by some googling. That solution may or may not work but it might be worth looking into if you don't feel like having the machine repaired.

Ah interesting, i did some googling of that issue which like you say points to the common hardware issue.

I am reasonably handy with electronics, we have quite a lot of high end soldering kit at work which i could use and even a few engineers which might be able to help.

Do you know where i might find some guidance to repairing the hardware myself?

I know I really need a new machine but i can't really afford to fully replace this one right now.

It's been awhile, but I seem to remember several YouTube videos showing how to do it. Now that Google owns YouTube, you should be able to search out which ones apply to what you're looking for. Your MacBook Pro is still a useful machine and it very likely has a few years left in it. If you have the proper tools on hand and soldering skills, go for it.
